Am so stuck on a boys name. We want something different, strong but not common (dare I say not chav potential) and we have been calling bump Blake for a while but something is holding me back-HELP! 3 weeks to d day and no others on short list!

Essexwelsh surely you were think of Gavin. :-) how about Ged

EssexWelsh · 14/03/2013 01:04

It's bad enough that I am Stacey from Wales and my partner is from Essex-Gary (Gary&Stacey), so you can just imagine if we had a Gavin. Also means Bryn (as in Uncle Bryn) is out of the question which I love!

Fab....

Love Ged only thought of it after my ds was 2, Rhys, Cian, I love Dai

anonymosity · 14/03/2013 01:20

I like the name, there's a boy in my DS's class called Blake, but I still think of Blake Carrington from Dynasty every time I hear it. But that's me.

poppydaisy · 14/03/2013 09:50

Very surnamey - think Quentin Blake!

EssexWelsh · 14/03/2013 10:20

But does it sound common or naughty boy name?

I actually think of Blake as a girls name - Blake Lively is the only one I have heard of until the other day when a friend had a baby girl and called her Blake..

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 14/03/2013 11:08

It sounds nice and normal to me, no naughtiness attached to it.

Other names that could be surnames but are used as a first name these days could be

Carter
Chase
Cole
Logan
Preston
Reed

I love it.

I had no idea who Blake Carrington is I had to google him and I am 32 so I doubt if a child is born now he will be associated with that! I read that a lot on here when I see the name Blake come up. Or they will mention Blake 7 (again something I had to google) a series on TV before the 80s!

Some of the reasons not to name a child something on MN just makes me giggle.

Spannah01 · 15/03/2013 14:30

My little one is Blake. It was my husbands choice and all through the pregnancy I was like you, unsure whether I liked it or not. He's a toddler now and the name couldn't suit him more. Although since naming him I now know of 4 or 5 other children with the same name, so it is rising in popularity.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/03/2013 16:47

I don't like it, sorry.

How about Bram/Bramwell, Dale or even Byron (must admit I don't personally like the latter)?

catwithflowers · 15/03/2013 16:50

Blake's 7 Grin

catwithflowers · 15/03/2013 16:51

Oh sorry, I see Ladymia mentioned that already ............

ladymia · 15/03/2013 16:53

Yes catwithflowers I mentioned how irrelevant it is Grin

whyno · 15/03/2013 17:07

Love it. Considered it myself.

EssexWelsh · 15/03/2013 22:29

Thanks for input, finding this process so hard and such a responsibility! Think we are pretty sure on it, don't know why I need reassurance from strangers but I do!

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 15/03/2013 22:50

Sorry I think it's dreadful. Like somebody Jordan would go out with.

Froggy2013 · 16/03/2013 00:41

Sorry but Blake is chav (hate surnames as first names)! Any other potentials?

EssexWelsh · 16/03/2013 00:41

Any suggestions then Vivienne?

OP posts:
EssexWelsh · 16/03/2013 00:44

Seriously not froggy, I would a chav name however I would also hate a name that is in top 100 and would be another in the same class. Your Harry, Olivers, Stanleys, Georges all very good, but don't want my child to be one of many....what to do?!

OP posts:
Froggy2013 · 16/03/2013 00:49

It's a difficult one ... We love the classic boys names you mentioned and my DH would not be massively keen on a name in the top 10. However my argument would be - why can I not call my child a name I love just because everyone else has it? It's important to choose a name you love, even if it is popular IMO.

Xander? Officially I think it's short for Alexander.

Gugglebum · 16/03/2013 04:04

Blake is fab. It's the middle name of one of my boys. It means handsome. No weird nickname potential. Yes, I say! Smile

Viviennemary · 16/03/2013 13:52

Well I like more traditional names like Michael, Thomas, Joseph and Philip. I also quite like Joshua. I'm not keen on surname type names. Have you looked through a baby name book. I can see why you want a more unusual name. It's difficult.

Damash12 · 16/03/2013 22:48

I do like Blake, I had it on my list but in the end we chose the name Tate and after a few odd expressions/comments we absolutely love it. We also have an Ashton and again no others at his school and I don't think (eek hope no-one else does) chavvy.

rubydoobydoo · 16/03/2013 22:56

It makes me think of Blake from Home and Away (probably showing age!)
