What could Jem be short for?

Not keen on Jeremy (makes me think of Beadle and the thought of giving [re?]birth to Jeremy Beadle, beard and all, is frankly terrifying) but I like the nickname Jem for a boy and just wondered if there were any suggestions?

Jeremiah and Jeronimo are a bit out there. James is too 'in there'. Something in between would be nice!

Jerome is a nice name which could have nn Jem.

Minty82 · 16/03/2013 21:29

It's Anne of Green Gables' son to me - Jem Blythe! Who is really James. Only one I've ever heard of but it makes me smile.

nooka · 17/03/2013 04:49

I think that Jerome Alexander sounds great, so I'd go for that :)

MadBraLady, it's for just that reason why I'd always use a long name because it's nice for a potential 'Jem' (or other nn) to have possible alternatives if he/she doesn't like the shortening. After all fundamentally the name is for the child not the parents.

In theory Jem could be a nn for any form of James/Jacob, of which there are many.

No, it's not. The Irish for James is Seamus. Jem is an anglicised nickname. Nice though!

MrsEricBana · 21/07/2017 23:59

The only Jem I've ever met was Jeremy but I think Jem on own fine. Lovely! I also like Kit, which seems similar to me.

SophieGiroux · 22/07/2017 00:05

I associate Jem with the Barbie like doll.
(Sorry I know this is a zombie thread!)

Jemuel is a biblical name. If I heard Jem, I would think it was short for Jeremy, but Jemuel is great.

Sophronia · 22/07/2017 01:33

Jeremias
Jeremiel
Jerome
Benjamin (bit far fetched maybe!)
Jemal
Jameson/Jamison
Jasper (as Jasper is a "gem" stone!)

Mclaren37 · 22/07/2017 03:47

Love Jem and think you can go with just that. However I like Jeremy! Jeremiah is nice too.

Uhohmummy · 22/07/2017 07:32

I thought it was Jessamy (boy's name).

Uhohmummy · 22/07/2017 07:34

Oops apparently it's a girl's name - ignore!

unikorn · 22/07/2017 08:49

Loose links but Jonah? Jenson?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/07/2017 09:42

Loving Jemuel.😄

LovelyBranches · 22/07/2017 11:34

I know a Jemin and his nn is either Jem or Jamie

Yy - as pp said, it's Anne of Green Gables' son Jem Blythe. Short for James in that case but a lovely name by itself!

bridgetreilly · 26/07/2017 00:01

Not entirely on topic, but I have a friend called Lev. When people ask what it's short for, he tells them, Le-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-ev.

So maybe you should just call him Jem, short for Je-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-em.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/07/2017 10:05

Jerard?

mamabeak · 26/07/2017 18:55

Jem is a short form of James, traditionally. Geronimo would be an unfortunate name choice, I think. Jeremiah is ok but has the connection with someone who complains and laments (as did the biblical character).

Jem on its own would be perfectly reasonable, if neither James (nor Jeremy) appeal.

TurquoiseDress · 27/07/2017 10:15

Jemima

inappropriateraspberry · 27/07/2017 10:22

Jen seems feminine to me - short for Gemma/Jemma etc. Also makes me think of the awesome 80s cartoon about Jem. She was a rockstar!
