I'd love to hear ideas for lovely Welsh names that aren't too tricky to pronounce and spell for the average non-Welshie!

So far we love:
Anwen
Ffion
Eirlys (although husband can't say this one so not sure!)

And for boys:
Evan
Brynley

Any suggestions? Thanks x

Is Bronwen welsh? I think it is?!?

happynappies · 12/03/2013 20:24

We know a baby Dilys, lovely name

maishoffwcingras · 12/03/2013 21:57

I'm a fan of Dilys too. Eirlys is nice but I think a lot of English would really struggle with it. Not that you should name your child for anybody else's benefit but I know it would really bug me if people didn't pronounce it properly. Also beware that anything with an F would be pronounced with an English F - I know from experience!

I love Brynley, and in fact had we had a boy that was top of the list (well, for me at least Wink).

(btw someone mentioned Olwyn - please don't name your baby Olwyn, it means wheel!)

smallsmith · 15/03/2013 20:14

Thanks to all for all your lovely suggestions, much appreciated! Smile

Our daughter is called Rhianwen (pronounced Ree-Ann-Wen). I no longer live in Wales but people manage the name fine. It can shorten to Rhi or Rhia. The name suits her :)

Myzoomymonkeys · 03/01/2022 09:31

Boys: Osian, Geraint, Rhodri
Girls: Seren, Eira, Nia, Sian, Eleri

WellTidy · 03/01/2022 10:34

Catrin is my favourite welsh girls name, but I also like Bethan, Megan and Manon out of the easiest to pronounce ones

I have a Welsh name and live in England and I’d say half of the people I know pronounce it in a way that I don’t, or shorten it because they can’t get their heads around the pronunciation. I do correct people but it gets embarrassing for me to keep having to correct and so I just let it go. But it does irk me. My name is on this thread as an easy to pronounce one, so if you think it might irk you or your child to have the wrong pronunciation over and over and over again, then please go really really simple.

I love Huw as a boys name. Thank the lord for Huw Edwards.
