Do you think a "googleable" name is important?

Just musing, I'm not pregnant just now!

Do you think it is important in this day and age to have a searchable name on the internet? E.g. if you have a "common" surname, do you think it's important to have a very unusual first name to distinguish you? Or is it not important at all?

My name, and dds, is unique mainly because of our surnames, which are very unusual. When I google my name I can only find one of me, which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing?!

What do others think?

I prefer not to be google-able. I only use my first (fairly uncommon name) and my second (very common surname) on FB because there are loads of people on FB with my name. It means I am hard to find so I am only found by people I want to find me!
It's quite scary the things people can find out about you online, as well.

I also prefer not to be google-able. I don't think it matters really, people use email addresses to find people on the net unless you have a really uncommon name.

It's funny isn't it? I can see pros and cons with both.

I wonder if this will be more of an issue for our children? Our lives are becoming ever more digital.

Opposing view: I'm starting a business under my name as it is unique enough to do so. Googling it does bring up me.

However, there is only one other in the country with the same name, who too has a business - a very successful one. She got myname.com first, so I'm stuck with myname.net! Pain in the arse!

I hate having a googleable name. Fair enough give a kid a unique middle name so that if they do something where being able to stand out is a good thing then they can use that. But it's just a pain in the arse having an unusual name. It means you are very rarely anonymous and too easily traceable if you like your privacy.

Some of the name threads on here really make me despair for the kids that end up saddled with some of the ridiculous names bandied about.

In my mind there's definitely a difference between googleable and crazy names, but I suppose a lot of that can be due to your surname of course.

For business purposes it can be very useful to have a name that is not already widely used - it can be helpful if you are easily searchable and, more importantly, 'findable'.

Will also be easier to set up an email account, facebook account, website if your name is fairly unique.

Isn't that the whole point of 'naming' someone - to identify them?
