So after thinking I was settled on a name I now have been tempted by Pearl. What do you think? Do you know any (under the age of 70)...... If so, do they like being called Pearl? I think it would be nice on a little girl!

All really pretty middle names too. I especially like Pearl Clementine. A long middle name works with such a short first name.

I knew a Pearl growing up. I can't imagine a 35 year old Pearl with a job, husband and kids. Think it's more a name for an old lady or a tiny girl.

My 6 month old daughter is called Pearl. We've only had compliments about how beautiful a name it is. Only my MIL had to 'come to terms' with her name! We felt it wasn't a popular name but still one that everyone could spell and say withough her having to repeat it over and over again. Go for it!

Pearl is a lovely timeless name, makes a change from all the Avs and Esmes that are v popular. I know a lady called diamond which is unusual as well. Fyi Lulu is the Arabic word for pearl & is also used as a baby name.

I'm a bit biased on this one.
My three week old daughter is Pearl.
We love her name, it suits her. I can't imagine her as anything else.
We didn't tell any family members our thoughts on names before she was born though so as to avoid opinions really.
Now they can only give us compliments, it would be rude to comment on a name that's already given
An uncle of mine who is a fisherman sent a message to say he loved her name as a Pearl is "the diamond of the sea".

I think it's a gorgeous name but I have to say, for me it's one of those names like Daisy, Millie, Maisie, Molly etc, that sound lovely on little girls but maybe not so good on career women trying to be taken seriously 25 years later (IMHO)

Not keen personally, I think it is very old lady, and for me is also a bit Pearly Queen too.

Some people will always make associations with a name, so I understand why people might think/say 'old lady' or think about the expression 'pearl necklace'! Most people will just associate it with your daughter when they meet her though so, personally, I wouldn't worry about any perceived associations.

I think it's a pretty word, but agree that the pronunciation where I am wouldn't be great. This may well not be a problem for you though, OP.

Personally, I find names of one syllable a bit short (I know that's the point!). How about Perla as an alternative? I know a 3 yr old Perla and I think it's sweet. Obviously some people will think of the underwear brand 'La Perla' but I don't think M&S has put anyone off of naming kids Mark or Spencer!

What's so wrong with old lady associations anyway?

I know quite a few lovely old ladies.

Is it not kind of offensive to reject something as being 'old lady'?

Pearl necklace is just revolting and not something I'd heard of until my dh enlightened me. Perhaps most people don't have such associations with a beautiful name.
