DH says he hates all girls names ending in -a

Apart from Sarah. Which ends in an "h".

Damn, our tastes do not converge. I started a thread a while ago - Claudia Vivienne or Cecilia Maud - and he thinks both are poncy.

So I suggested Louisa - but he only likes Louise. He also suggested Jane and Alice (Alice is okay).

How can this be a sensible stance? Most girls names end in -a, including mine.

Sorry for posting here - the baby names topic is covered in football spam. I'll move the thread when all the spam is gone.

I also love Rebecca but don't like Becky. Not sure if that's been suggested.

What has your DH suggested?

CruCru · 03/03/2013 18:44

Alice and Jane.

I love Alice. It is dds MN. Her first name is Meg. What about Megan or Margaret or Maggie.

butterfingerz · 03/03/2013 18:57

Alice and Jane are so yawn, he must have no imagination... sorry.

Mine both have foreign names so I've lost touch with English trends iyswim.

My name ends in an -e as does DDs. My sisters name ends in an -h

In DDs class the girls names end in -n, -y, -l, -e and only one -a.

DD is Alice by the way so I think it is lovely :)

fortifiedwithtea · 03/03/2013 19:25

Go with Claudia Alice. You been have a name choice included then. Announce the name the moment the baby is born, he really cann't argue with you at that time. Grin.

I have an Eloise Wink.

CruCru · 03/03/2013 20:16

I like your style fortified.

Having said that, I do like Marianne.

I think there is a difference between names which end in -a just because they do (Laura, Emma, Rowena,Sarah(h)), and names where a less frilly version exists without the a (Louise/a, Helen/a, Sophie/a). It sounds like he has a problem with the latter rather than the former, and I can kind of see his point - except, as someone else pointed out, in the case of Julie/a!

My parents had exactly the same argument, with almost exactly the same names, 30 years ago. She wanted Imogen, he wanted Jane, and the only name they almost agreed on was Helen/a, but she thought Helen was boring and he thought Helena was poncy. Which is no help at all, as I'm not going to out myself by telling you what we ended up being called, but it amused me!

forgetmenots · 05/03/2013 18:37

Might he come round? I was always determined DD would not have a name ending in a (please don't flame me, I just found it too girly) and I too prefer almost all the variations of names without the a (including Helen over Helena!) BUT... My short list of two for a DD now both end in A!!!

He may change his mind if it's the right one, he might jut be trying to tell you he isn't keen on frilly names! :)

Frikadellen · 05/03/2013 18:46

I think the problem is that I basically just want him to capitulate. Which he may not. I do have time and it could still be a boy.

In the meantime what do you think of Miriam? I like it but not as much as Claudia.

MidnightMasquerader · 06/03/2013 01:05

Claudia is so lovely.

hatebeak · 06/03/2013 10:18

Love Miriam.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/03/2013 10:28

Miriam, yes that's impossible to tie down to a particular time, it's uncommon, unfussy. if DH objected to Claudia on the grounds it was "Italian" he may well object to Miriam for being "Jewish" (nothing wrong with etiher name of course!).

When are you due your 20 week scan, will you want to know your baby's gender?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/03/2013 10:29

Sorry for typos.

CruCru · 06/03/2013 10:54

Yes, we might find out, if only to eliminate some name choices.

Do you have a strong feeling it will be a girl? hope you come back and tell us Smile

I was just re-reading the suggestions here and saw you thought he might like Emma.

On another Baby Name thread I saw Penelope suggested, I'm guessing your DH might think that's too fussy.

CruCru · 06/03/2013 13:38

Hi

Yes, I have a feeling it is a girl.

He might like Emma but Penelope is probably too fancy for him [sigh].

I suppose Persephone is also out? Humph.

What about Emme or Hattie?
