Hi everyone

Due to having a lot of welsh blood in me (despite living in London) I really want a welsh name for my daughter. At the moment I'm leaning towards Meredith. Does anyone have any thoughts, or better suggestions?

Seren means star
Cariad means darling

or there's Carys, Ceri, Cerys, Myfanwy, Rhihannon, Rhian, Angharad, Anwen, Ffion, Menna, Merrion, Ceinwen (pronounced Kine-wen), Gwenllian, Gwen, Eleri.

I must say Meredith sounds very English to me, despite its Welsh origins. maybe it's the anglicised spelling.

Congratulations by the way!

Other names - Bethan, Elin, Megan, Alow, Alys, Heledd, Cerys, Carys, Enfys (rainbow), Arianwen, Anwen, Gwen, Sioned.

I would love a welsh name too. Finding it hard to get a more modern one. Bethan is the closest I've come but still not sure on it.

coldcupoftea · 02/03/2013 17:49

I love Meredith, it's a beautiful name and is unusual enough for there not to be lots of them, but common enough that people know how to spell it!

Cwtchbach · 02/03/2013 20:08

Nia, Nerys, Lowri, Llinos, Gwennan, Non, Rhiannon, Manon, Ceri, Mari, Mair.

Nia being the best of course Grin

BrainDeadMama · 02/03/2013 20:11

Love Meredith. Also love Anwen, Cerys, Bethan and Elin.

PaulaPixie · 02/03/2013 20:47

Eirwen is lovely (white snow), Delyth (pretty), and Eira (snow). Meredith pronounced in both the Welsh and English manner is beautiful too.

PaulaPixie · 02/03/2013 20:55

Oh and Arwen, a welsh name meaning fair / fine, made famous by the Elf maiden Arwen Undomiel in The Lord of the Rings (Liv Tyler).

mejon · 02/03/2013 21:07

Meredith/Meredydd is usually a boy's name in Welsh.

How about Mared as an alternative?

SadPander · 02/03/2013 21:21

I only know of female Meredydds where I am in Wales so perhaps it depends on where abouts you are - think its a lovely name btw

PaulaPixie · 02/03/2013 21:24

It can be male / female, lovely strong name either way x

TwllBach · 02/03/2013 21:28

I like Heledd and Gwenllian.

Welsh names are fabulous Grin

lycheemartini · 02/03/2013 21:31

I love Mabli (loveable)

TalkativeJim · 02/03/2013 21:42

Buddug

Leeds2 · 03/03/2013 00:01

Megan. Bronwen. Eleri, I think, is Welsh!

BikeRunSki · 03/03/2013 00:15

My favorite girl's name ever is Elin. Catrin and Eleri are lovely too.

alexpolismum · 03/03/2013 20:09

My favourite Welsh girls names are Bethan and Eleri.

I like Meredith in a Welsh accent, but somehow it loses its magic when said in an English accent. For me, that is. (and I have an English accent!)

TotallyEggFlipped · 03/03/2013 20:14

Angharad

Mrsrobertduvall · 03/03/2013 20:20

Ooh my name has been mentioned....

I have an Auntie Eirwen too.

Rhian. Rhiannon?

CheeseStrawWars · 03/03/2013 20:21

I adore the name Angharad.

loubielou31 · 03/03/2013 20:29

Ffion? I like it.
My mum wanted to call me Mair but said that English people always pronounced it my-er so I am named something quite different.
I've never liked Angharad, too harsh sounding (but also went to school with a complete cow by that name which may have coloured my judgement a little.

Bejeena · 04/03/2013 12:59

I want a Welsh name too and am quite keen on Enid for a girl at the moment.

Lionsntigersnbears · 04/03/2013 19:39
