How would you pronounce Naomi? Nay-oh-mee? Or Ny-oh-mee? Or even Nayo-mee? I really like it but am worried it'll never get pronounced how I hear it!

Nay-oh-mee. It's a lovely name. I did have one in my class at school and she had to constantly correct the pronunciation of it.

Much nicer, softer sound than when people put the stress on the O. Unfortunately that seems to be what the majority do. :(

See I like Nay-OH-mee but just as I'd got my heart set on it I heard someone say Nay-uh-mee and I thought, Is she going to spend the rest of her life correcting people? We have to spell out surname as it is! DH has a different favourite so I would be having to persuade him anyway!

There is a 2.5yo Naomi in DD's nursery class and none of the kids can say it. DD kept comin home saying she'd played with Yaoni/Ioni/Yaoly and in the end I had to ask who it was!
Lovely name though. I like Nadia too.

That's interesting three, if others kids can't say it, can she?! I like Nadia but don't think DH would go for it!

Also another thing. When my DMum has a blocked nose and says her name over the phone she has had it said/spelled back to her as "Dayomee"!

We have to spell out our surname (its one of two options and people tend to assume its the other spelling!) so nice as Nahla is, I want something that's fairly straightforward to spell. Makes me think of the Lion King too! :)

Nay oh me. I know a three year old one pronounced this way and I don't think she's had any problems.

I think Naomi is just pronounced as its spelt. ..I had a friend at secondary school called Naomi and never had any problems with people saying bit wrong.

Halle Berry' s daughter is called Nahla. I think that's lovely FYI

My name is Naomi, I'm pronounced Nay-oh-mee. No one person pronounces it the same (or spells it the same for that matter). Tbf though you'd get that with loads of names.

Naomi is a lovely name and if I'd had a girl it would have been my number 1 choice

I went to school with a NAY-uh-me but all the younger Naomis I've met have been Nay-OH-mee. I do prefer the first pronounciation as I think it's a softer sound, but the second seems more common. One of the adult Naomis I met also said that people have lots of trouble spelling her name, there are always extra letters being added in eg. Naomie, Naomee, Nayomi, Naome, Naohme, Naeomi...

I still think it's a beautiful name though, but I'm sure I would have had to grin and bear it with the varied pronounciation and spelling.

A common nickname seems to be "Gnome"....Not sure if I like that!

It'll be pronounced however you choose to do so and people will get used to it.You love it, use it :)

Same as Alicia, is it Alice-ea or aleesha...

Sophia is it Sophie-a or Sophia like the city?

I go round in circles about it! I would really like a Biblical name for (we think, scan wasn't 100% clear!) DD and Naomi wasn't on the short list but I added it as a late runner. I can't definitely decide until she's born but will make sure it's still on the table as an option :)

Theas you're right, it'd be whatever we chose it to be. It's like Mia/Mya too, isn't it?

Ruth wouldn't be an ideal choice for us because we have a one syllable surname so it would sound too blunt. It's also a friend's name so it might be weird!

Anna is a fab Biblical name with (at least for me) no sort of preconceptions -as is Naomi. That was really important for me naming my child. I didn't want them to think, for instance " grace" that'll be a pretty ballerina or a child (no idea why, Grace Darling certainly wasn't , out there in a boat doing her bit, but you know what I mean).

Anna could be the pretties frilliest fairy dress wearing little girl, or the tomboy in the mud, a punk/emo etc teen , the mechanic at the garage, a surgeon, teacher or stay at home mum.

If you don't use Naomi (great name) and Ruth isn't good, try Anna and see if it fits!
