Edward or Frederick?

Help us choose between these two for DS1. We have a fairly classic 2 syllable English surname and he will also get a pretty standard English/biblical family name as a middle name.

My dilemma is that I prefer Edward to Frederick for the full name (and probably for use as an adult), but I'm not sure about the nicknames for Edward, whereas I love Freddie. And I can see myself wanting to use a nickname when he's little.

Thoughts?

I like Freddie too but having taught so many of them over the years I'd go with Edward myself. A good friend of mine has a Bear.

As a nickname I mean!

Much, much, much prefer Edward (and Eddie isn't a million miles from Freddie).

I prefer Edward to Frederick. ...but Freddie is better than Eddie! So sorry that's not much help really!

I have an Edward.... love the name although might be a bit biased! He gets 'Ed' which I LOVE. I always thought he would get eddie... but its funny how it doesnt always work like that!

Why not Ned? That's a great Edward nickname!

serin · 25/02/2013 23:09

Love Edward and Edmund

Hate Fred/Frederick/Freddie (just can't get past Kruger and West)

Our dog is 'Ned'

Ok, so overwhelmingly Edward - interesting, I thought it might go the other way. I love Ed for an older child/adult, just have to work on a more babyish nickname which I'm happy with too. Teddy is a good suggestion, thanks, and I love Bear, but not sure I could go round yelling it in a supermarket!

I love Edward but am biased Wink
We shorten it to Eddie, although I was sure that I would call him Teddy (in the end it didn't suit him at all and he is so much more of an Eddie). Ned is also a nickname but I used to live in Scotland where a "ned" isn't a great name for a small child! so couldn't bring myself to use that for him!

I know an adult Freddy and it's a nice name on him but am not keen on the full name Frederick

I am going to throw a spanner in the nickname works and add Woody and Ricky :)
