Fabian?
I posted recently as we had narrowed our boys name list down to Samuel and Oscar. But I wanted to try and find something a bit less popular. I've trawled through lists and can't seem to find anything. And then saw Fabian on another post.
DH quite likes it but Im not sure. What would the nn be? Or do you think it would remain Fabian.
Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks

Ryder is bloody horrible.

Fabian (or Caspian, Lucian, Quentin) are far nicer and more interesting than Sam, Oscar or Max - his name will be much more easily remembered! Great choice.

I would not shorten Fabian at all!

Two things- what is this with names needing to be "out there" to be easily remembered? I have no difficulty remembering the names of people called Tom, or James........

Oh, and you may not shorten it- but everyone else will!

It sounds posh and a bit pretty. Am not keen. Also makes me think of the fabian society. I would put it with names like Rupert and Sebastian.

I know a female Fabienne (Fab-ee-en), which I much much prefer to the male version.

What about Otis?

I know a Fabian who is in his mid 30s, he has no nn and his name has not being shortened. I would consider the name a bit posh but maybe that's because the Fabian I know is far from a bit posh. His name is pronounced Fay-Beean.
Lovely name.

Dunno, I am vaguely aquainted with a delightful elderly man but am now terminally embarrased to talk to him because I'm completely incapable of remembering his name. He shares a surname with a famous celebrity, but the only thing I can ever remember is that his name isn't David . . . but it is something like that (Michael, James, John????)

My DS2 is Fabian nn Fab/Fabe. People are always commenting on how it's a lovely name. Interesting, easy to spell, anyone who says it sounds gay is just childish

Yes, I can be a bit childish and I apologise

Grin you do realize will be spending a significant amount of time with children for the next few years.....

Children will always find something to make fun of, if it isn't a name, it will be hair colour, glasses, etc I wouldn't let it put anyone off a name

We recently had some renovation works done and about half the tradesmen were called Steve. I found that very confusing. The rest were either Mike or Andy.

There are so many lovely classic normal names available - why not make use of them?

But why voluntarily give them an extra one when you don't have to?

My dd once said to me "You gave me the full whammy, didn't you? Red hair, freckles, glasses and posh"

God know what she would have said to me if I'd also called her Halcyon...........!

I don't think ds1's classmates do make fun of each other's names. I honestly have ever heard any sign of this at all, they are all 9 or 10.

It's more about who has a nice personality, and who tells the rudest jokes, and who can play football. They don't care about their names.

As in top cyclist Fabian Cancellara, who is very nice indeedy. I love Gabriel. My youngest is called Ralph and I don't know any other boys with that name. We are in a sea of Finlays, Oscars and Camerons where we live.

This does seem to have stirred
up some strong opinions.
Pinkflamingos i do agree with you in that children will always find something. And dont think Fabian is that out there. Just not really overly popular. Think id rather that than Jake or Tom or James.
Baskinseals i like Arlo but there are loads where i live. Cant use Rafael but do like Xavier.
More discussions needed with DH i think...
