Just that, really, DH and I really like this name pronounced one way (I won't tell you which) but I am worried that it's not clearly pronounced like that and the poor wee soul would have a liftetime of correcting people so glad of your gut reactions. Thanks :)

Like Nathan but without the 'N'! What other way is there Confused unless it's confused with Aiden. Never heard of it and not particularly keen.

BabyRoger · 06/02/2013 15:24

Yes, like Nathan or Aiden I would assume I had misheard Aiden

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 06/02/2013 15:31

After struggling with what sounded like Aiden in my head I decided it sounds more like
Ethan.

Is it a name OP?

AlohaMama · 06/02/2013 15:46

Never heard of it but when I say it, it sounds like a name I should have heard of, iyswim. I would pronounce like nathan, ay-than. How else could it be pronounced, iy-than?

weaselm4 · 06/02/2013 15:50

I would say Ethan as it seems similar to Aoife. Mind you, it doesn't have the 'i', so I dunno..

hellokitty123 · 06/02/2013 15:53

I'd pronounce Aithan as Ai-than. Is there any other way Confused?

zippey · 06/02/2013 15:55

Id pronounce it Aye-fan.

Like the infamous Ythan challenge in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

Gwennan · 06/02/2013 15:56

I'm going to plump for Athan (like Nathan without the N) but it could be EYE-than.

deleted203 · 06/02/2013 15:56

I'd pronounce it Nathan without the N.

NotADragonOfSoup · 06/02/2013 15:57

I"m going with it rhyming with Nathan.

forevergreek · 06/02/2013 16:17

Like Ethan. But I would spell it Ethan if so

ladymia · 06/02/2013 17:14

I know an Aithan and it's pronounced "A-Tan"

He hates his name as everyone pronounces it with a TH. Most people just call him A now

seeker · 06/02/2013 17:19

I would think it was a typo! But I would say Aye-than- I think anybody would.

zipzap · 06/02/2013 17:23

With an Ee sound at the front in Ireland or an Ay sound in the uk...

NotADragonOfSoup · 06/02/2013 18:51

I would say Aye-than- I think anybody would.

Anybody apart from all the people who said Athan to rhyme with Nathan. :o

mybootsaremuddy · 06/02/2013 19:00

I would think either ay-than or eye-than.

CarlingBlackMabel · 06/02/2013 19:05

To rhyme with Nathan.

But it sounds like a mis-pronounced Aiden.

AliceWChild · 06/02/2013 19:08

I'd pronounce it to rhyme with Nathan but would look quizzically and wonder if it was eye- thun

LadyInPink · 06/02/2013 21:14

ladymia - oh yes, like Anthony which can be pronounced with a hard 'T' or a soft 'Th'.

OP can you let us know now we've been guessing for a while which way you prefer please? Smile

edinfirst · 06/02/2013 22:16

Thanks so much ladies, you have confirmed my fears that I had let DH talk me into a pronunciation that's not obvious (eye-than). The longer you live with something yourself the harder it can be to see it as others would, so your comments have really helped, back to the drawing board me thinks...

forevergreek · 06/02/2013 22:24

if you like eye-than though, why not just use ethan?

Sashapineapple · 07/02/2013 09:29

I would think Ay-Than.

CarlingBlackMabel · 07/02/2013 12:58

if you like eye-than though, why not just use ethan?

Because every one I know pronounces Ethan Ee-than, not eye-than?
