Aaah - feel like I am back to the drawing board - girl's name to go with George

Hi, this naming thing is so difficult. I always think I have settled on a name but then I change my mind. Nothing seems right.

Our current list for DD due in May is Elizabeth, Rose, Margaret, Alice, Victoria.

I had my heart set in Rose and this is what my DH wants, but I just think it might be a bit overdone with every middle name being Rose. I really want a name which is not "now" if that makes sense. So then I moved to Elizabeth as a more "classic" name but that doesn't feel right. I like Alice but DH is not as keen. I also like Margaret but is that too "old lady". I like classic, royal names. Victoria is an outlier because I hate Vicky and I think it will inevitably become Vicky.

Any other suggestions? I want it to "match" George. So that they sit nicely together. Should I stick with Rose or are my concerns valid? Is it really "now"? I was at a nursery today settling in my son and every name seemed so "now" and it just made me want for something a little more underused. So no cutesy names, no Rubys, Lilys, Charlottes, Avas, Lilas, Lolas, Evas, Evies etc. I like these names but I want something a little less common, if you know what I mean.

Thanks!

I love Margaret. I know an adult Victoria who is firmly a Victoria - anyone calling her Vicky gets short shrift. Names don't have to be shortened if the person called it doesn't want it to be.

Other classic suggestions: Anne (so elegant, I love it), Ruth, Naomi, Clara

I think George and Rose is lovely

NowPlayingZone · 06/02/2013 13:56

In support of other suggestions I like Caroline or Helena for lovely names that aren't 'now'. I also like Joanna or Josephine.

Might be a few ideas you have missed here: www.confetti.co.uk/article/view/8210-8311-0-Aristocratic___royal_names_Baby_Shower.do

Alice is lovely :)

Gugglebum · 06/02/2013 19:53

As you said, OP, Rose is used a lot, as a MIDDLE name, so why not use it as a first? You loved it, your DH loves it, and I bet there won't be many others anywhere she goes. It's lovely, simple and classic.

CarriMarie · 06/02/2013 20:15

Rosalie Alice or Alice Victoria.

Primrose123 · 06/02/2013 20:18

I misread your post OP. I thought May was one of the names, but then realised that your little girl is due in May.

How about May as a name? I think it sounds very pretty.

pod3030 · 06/02/2013 20:18

ivy
enid
evie

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/02/2013 20:23

I think Princess Margaret was Margaret Rose , which is a lovely name ( IMHO )
How about Marguerite , or Margarita ?
I have a George , his sister is Jennifer .

Lollybrolly · 06/02/2013 20:29

You could go with a variation of Rose as already suggested. Here are some:

Rosa
Rosalie
Rosabelle/a
Rosalina
Rose-ann/a
Rosie
Rosemary
Rose-Marie
Rosalind/a
Rosamund
Rosine

or perhaps double barrell it??? Cant think of any good ones myself though tbh.

Other suggestions I have are:

Lucinda/Lucy
Jessica
Anna
Grace
Rachel
Jasmine
Annabel
Esme
Amy
Rebecca
Josephine
Louisa/Louise
Alicia
Helena
Sylvia
Phoebe
Freya
Imogen
Alexandra/ria
Katy/Kate
Hermione

You seem to have similar taste in names to me - if I had had a boy, then my preferred name was George,
For our girls, I liked Victoria (but hate "Vicky" - and "Tori" is even worse, imo). Also considerd Alce, Elizabeth and Margaret but all ruled out for various reasons.

What about:
Emma, Emily, Rebecca, Lucy, Sophie, Julia, Caroline, Philippa, Matilda or Mary?

LexyMa · 06/02/2013 21:22

Been lurking as I have a George too and one on the way. I also love royal names (both mine and my mother's names are 20th c queens of England) so I like Charlotte (not common here), Caroline, Anne and have got a lot of other good ideas from this thread! Only 10 weeks so a bit early but if I have another boy my main requirement is to avoid "Thomas the tank engine names"! So no James, Edward, Henry... but there seems so much more variety in girls' names.

WickWackThurso · 06/02/2013 21:53

I know a Rebecca & George, and a Kate (Katharine) & George

emmyloo2 · 07/02/2013 03:58

Thanks everyone - some great suggestions. I also love Mary which a few people suggested by it has been declared a "bit boring" by the DH. I think it's fabulous though.

Catherine will be the middle name, which some have suggested for the first name. This is after my dear late aunt and will definitely be the middle name. Can't be the first name due to family reasons.

Anne is lovely but I don't think it goes with our surname.

Alice is now gearing up to be my favourite I think.

I do love Rose although I really do wonder whether it will date in a way that Elizabeth, Alice, Margaret, Mary etc will not....any thoughts?

Rose as a first name would be pretty and doesn't pop up as a first name very often. Unlike Beatrice and Alice it has more of a 'z' sound so if you are happy it works with your multiple 's' surname, it goes nicely with George.

FranglaisMaman · 07/02/2013 15:02

From your choices...

George and Alice, I think that would make a lovely sib set.

If popularity is an issue for you, then sadly I do think Rose is becoming too popular as everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of using it as a middle name for girls.

Flossy78 · 07/02/2013 15:13

I have an Alice. Lots of people comment on how lovely her name is and we've met no other little Alice's yet. So I know I am biased but its a great name. She's nearly 2 now and can say her own name without any difficulty Smile

happynappies · 07/02/2013 15:23

My dh is George coincidentally... I've got three girls: Elizabeth, Sarah and Charlotte, and a ds - Edward. The names all sort of go together I think. We started off regal, than didn't want to choose Victoria (because of the Vicky possibility) and used Mary as a middle name... it's difficult to strike a balance between classic/not too popular and the 'not too boring'... George and Alice sounds lovely though. We know a George and Freya, and a George and Jessica, and George and Amy...
