What is wrong with 'Freya'?

I'm pregnant with DD 2 and although I had a name for my first, in the end she didn't suit it and her dad named her. I love the name and the reason for its choice (named after a character in mythology and a painting), but discovered after her registration that it was in the top 10 for that year. Not normally a problem, untill she started nursery and there were 3 others there. (Although all spelt differently).

So, with DD2 I am determined to get something not so much 'of its time'.

The other day I heard someone call 'Freya' and thought it was lovely. It's stayed with me and has beaten my other option Elanor. However, it seems its very popular at the moment..... People are even being derisive about it.

So, tell me whats wrong with it? Don't worry, I'm not stuck on it for life or anything like that, I would just like to understand why some people don't like it.

I think it's a brilliant name. It's not top 10 so can't be that popular. I've never met one and I know loads of littlies.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 14/03/2013 23:30

mosman really don't like dark hair eh? Wink

williaminajetfighter · 15/03/2013 22:12

Agree with some of the others. It's a bit twee and just a tiny bit precious like Amelie and Isabella.

To me it's just a name that conjures up a certain type of girl who gets cross at mummy and stamps her feet when pony riding lessons are cancelled.

Sorry - all names have associations for people and that's mine!

I like Freya - but there are an awful lot of them about.

Viviennemary · 15/03/2013 22:48

It's quite a pretty sounding name. But my opinion is that it's very much of the moment. Class 2013. And will date. But that's only what I think. I might well be wrong.

itinerant · 15/03/2013 22:57

I have a Freya, don't drive a 4 x 4, can't stand Boden, but am very middle class Wink

My Freya is petite, dark haired and slightly mad. I love her Grin

louisianablue2000 · 15/03/2013 23:07

I love the name, and seriously considered it until I realised it was gaining in popularity, I think it's now in the top 20. It was a name we considered because of my heritage and I didn't want people to think we'd just gone for a popular name.

We were going to call DS Frida if he'd been a girl.

TheKelda · 16/03/2013 00:21

I love it. I'm slightly biased though as it's my baby dd's middle name.

Moonlight25 · 28/06/2021 16:55

I'm pregnant now and looking for names. We want to call our children either by a Celtic or Germanic names. I don't know if I'm having a girl or a boy yet, but I have a feeling it's going to be a girl, in the same way I knew DC1 was going to be a boy. I have a long list of names but for a first daughter I'd like a name that embodies womanhood of Germanic origin. DH and me decided to choose Freya, we're Pagan and apart of being the name of a very important Goddess it means "Lady". I like the name but I'm doubting if it will suit. In my opinion Freya sounds like a name for a blonde and blue eyed girl, I'm dark haired and my husband is blond. My DS1 is dark blond and brown eyed. I know I'm a light eye carrier and when my son was born I discovered I must carry genes that allow blonde hair too. So I don't know if to call DC2 if it's a girl Freya anyway or depending on her phenotypes. We're also looking for unusual original names of European origin, specifically Celtic or Germanic and Freya for some reason has become really popular lately, I guess because of tv shows like vikings or something. Since we want to homeschool that shouldn't be a problem of having 4 classmates called the same way I guess 😂. I do also like names like Sif, Eowynn, Sigrid, Ingrid and Ylva, but I want to call Ylva a girl who isn't the first girl being born.

ILoveShula · 28/06/2021 18:28

It was nice but became too popular so is a bit boring. Frey isn't very nice.

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/06/2021 18:31

They're both lovely names, but if you use Eleanor for God's sake spell it properly.

TalbotAMan · 28/06/2021 18:31

I've known two cats called Freya.

adrianmolesmole · 28/06/2021 18:32

Isn't there a famous model called Freya with dark hair? I think it's a lovely, pretty, delicate name and would suit a girl of any colouring.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 28/06/2021 18:32

Freya is a bit of a ten bob millionaire name around here.
They’re definitely a certain type of parent.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 28/06/2021 18:34

Baby would be 8 nowSmile

Aozora13 · 28/06/2021 18:35

I love it. I’ve met a few Freyas who are now in their 30s/40s but there are loads of littlies called Freya round my way now. I actually considered it for DD2 but my eldest is Astrid so it felt a bit themey, especially as we have no scandi connections.

WeIcomeToGilead · 28/06/2021 18:35

@Mosman

I have a blonde blue'd Freya who is a delicate little flower, I know another blonde cherub called Freya who is equally gorgeous.

Unfortunately I also know two other dark haired, built like a brick shithouse girls called Freya too.

I'm quite happy for it to be "of the time" it is the time and so along with Poppy, Lily, Lexi it will date Confused

Revive a 60's name like Lisa or Michelle if you want something out there.

WTAF you absolute weirdo 😱

Oh? I've never actually met a Freya, but I thought it was fairly classy? Obviously not!
AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 28/06/2021 18:38

It’s very popular in my area. I agree it certainly used to be classy but it’s very over used here.
I also don’t like the “Fre” beginning of it 😂

Notcalledlottie · 28/06/2021 18:41

My partners daughter is a Freya

We don’t get on

My friends and I have nicknamed her ‘freebie Freya’ as she refuses to get a job

It’s not the nicest name-there are much nicer ones out there

StevieNix · 28/06/2021 18:41

I think Freya is a beautiful name and would use it in a heartbeat if it wasn’t so popular- so if that’s a concern for you maybe best to avoid it.
I personally would prefer to use a name not in the top 50 unless I absolutely loved it.
Mainly as we gave DS a very popular name by accident (now in the top 10 but it wasn’t when we named him)

LunaDreams · 28/06/2021 18:51

I love Freya! It was top of our list if we were having a girl.

I think it is pretty widely used nowadays which didn't bother me but if that will get to you then maybe go for something else.

I personally can't stand Frida! Names are such a personal taste...you will never please everyone so just go for what you and your DH like x
