A bit overused & try-hard right now, IMO. But cute.

Dd (who is two years old) has three friends called Tilly. I would say it is overused.

I love it, it's DD3s middle name. It has gained massively in popularity though in last 10 years from 200 babies of this name in 1996 to 1273 in 2010. So it's likely to be one of those 'of it's time' type names, which would date your daughter, like Susan or Tracey does to women in their 50s.

I know three between 6mths and 12mths - in fact since DD was born I think I've come across more babies called Matilda than any other name. DD's a Grace so I'm clearly not too fussed about popularity myself - but funnily enough I don't know any others!

I think its a really lovely name. I prefer the nn Tilda over Tilly. I know of two Matilda's, one aged 4 and the other aged 7. I know two Tilly's aged 1 and 18. Doesn't seem too popular where I am.

LOVE it. Would be having it for my baby if husband didn't hate it!

I know I'm biased as I have a Tilda, but I see soo many other names more. Ruby, Sophia, Ella, Ava/Eva/Evie are all super popular (as in at least 2/3 in every group). I know Matilda is popular, bug not that popular in my experience.

Also, when you look af the stats for the year I was born (early 80s), I have the no 1 name. There was never another in my year at school. I worked with 2 others (in my large team), but that's it. I wouldn't even think about popularity! It's v deceptive!

Ooh, where did you find the early 80s stats legallyblond? I have an extremely popular 80s name too (though I was named after my grandmother), and again, I was the only one in my whole school. Which is probably why I wasn't bothered about inflicting a popular name on DD. Though the popularity thing did put me off Eva, which I also loved, as it just felt that bit too faddy (and I have met hundreds).

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread! Matilda's great - and the Roald Dahl character is a fantastic namesake!

I have a Matilda who is 2, we call her Tilly.

I didn't realise it was so popular but I'm always hearing other people call the same at play groups and Softplay...

It's beautiful and has always been a favourite of mine but it's too popular for me - 48th most popular in the 2011 stats up from 53rd in 2010.

It's as far from a Tracey name as I can think of though! It makes me think of Norman Queens.

It's a lovely name and a strong possibility for my dd but I have to say the growing popularity is putting me off. This thread has made me realise its even more popular than I thought!

Blimey, didn't realise Matilda was the next big thing. I love it, but could I have a Madeleine & Matilda?! Surname begins with m too!
