Ruth?

Wondering what the general opinion of Ruth is?
Granny chic? Or just granny?
I think it's lovely and would suit a little girl. I also think it's a nice name for an adult. It's just barely heard of. Does it have the same appeal of say Martha?

My Dd 1 is a Ruth. She does suit it and likes the name too. We did have a wobble when a boy at a Birthday party told her that she was named after a part of a house. She's got over that one now.

DD has Ruth as her middle name:

Charlotte Ruth.

My DD (2.5yo) is Ruth. We wanted a name that was unusual in the sense that she wouldn't be one of four in her class at school (like I was! Grin) but that people would be able to spell and that wasn't too out-there.

Her middle name is Ann, which I think is rubbish if I'm honest - I don't like Ruth Ann together but we wanted to use Ann as it's both my DMum and MIL's middle name, so family reasons - but they do sound a bit 'meh' as a combo.

DD gets called Roo, Ruthie and Ruthie-Roo.

No, hate it.

Too biblical and old fashioned.

I really love Ruth as a name. I love "virtue" names, and the story of Ruth is one of the loveliest biblical stories (had the reading at my wedding...). It's also a very subtle virtue name with a beautiful meaning (Mercy).

I hate it because it reminds me of a horrible relative.

My middle name is Ruth and i too had the reading at my wedding. I hated the name as a child and really like it now.

Casmama · 20/01/2013 22:31

I think it is a really dull name despite the fact it is my middle name.

Ruth's quite a nice name.

Not a name that I associate with any particular age of person, as I've only ever met a handful of Ruth's.

Like it. Loads of Ruths in my family, but none children. Would you well with a frillier middle name like Josephine or Arielle.

What do you call a woman with tiles on her head?

Ruth.

It's a no from me! But then I don't know any. I'm Ruthless...

Know a few people named Ruth including a six year old but really think its a dreadful name. Incredibly dull and not at all sexy or beautiful.

I'm not a fan of one syllable names. Dan. Dave. Liz. Ann. Ruth. Etcetera.

Sorry my last message sounded quite harsh. I just think Ruth is very immemorable. Martha is fab though. Strong. Teutonic. The name of a little girl or the director of a company!

I find it very harsh and unfeminine, sorry.

I like it- in fact, DC3 (who is due next week) with be Ruth if I have a girl. I like the fact that she won't be one of several in her class when she's older, and it's a name suitable for all ages.

I much prefer it to Martha. Unfortunately the father of the Ruth I know cannot pronounce "th" properly so she gets called Roof at home.

Report
Rhubarbgarden · 21/01/2013 13:18

I love it and it would have been on my shortlist but DH's family can't pronounce the 'th' sound. Hmm

I know two mid-20s Ruths. Nice enough name.

Martha is vile though

Not 'granny' at all - it is a little dull but pleasant enough.

It makes me think of a calm and sensible person.
