My husband and I are both keen on Reacher for our boy but don't know if I'm brave enough! So what do people think?

Biscuit

I actually like it, but immediately reminded me of 'Treacher' the house elf in Harry Potter! But we are in a similar situation where everyone will find associations with non-common names.

DawnOfTheDee · 19/01/2013 17:14

First thought - Jack Reacher (from Lee Childs' series of novels)

Second thought - reach-around yes my mind is in the gutter

AppleOgies · 19/01/2013 17:14

Seriously?

DuchessFanny · 19/01/2013 17:16

That means ' straw' ( as in drinking straw ) in Dutch and all i can think about when i hear it xx Do you have any others you like we can vote on Grin

Jellymuffin · 19/01/2013 17:17

It's a minor character from a terry prattchet book x we always joked about it as a name but when we got pregnant looked more at old traditional names (Albert etc) but as we get closer to the birth I can't help feeling the need to name him something a bit more original x

Seriously?

'Reaching' is a way of saying trying to puke (retching) in some parts.

Jellymuffin · 19/01/2013 17:22

Not round here thankfully! Gosh, didn't expect such a strong reaction!

Thought it sounded a bit like American names in the vein of Chase and Hunter! I didn't think it was that out there!

HDee · 19/01/2013 17:23

No, it's awful.

HDee · 19/01/2013 17:24

I also hate Chase and Hunter. Especially Hunter. WTF would someone name their child after a person who kills other living things?

OmgATalkingOnion · 19/01/2013 17:27

Nooo! I also think of Jack Reacher. Although I enjoy the books I can't equate the name with a baby.

DessieLou · 19/01/2013 19:40

Hmmm, I'm normally all for unusual names but I'm afraid my first thought was retching/vomiting too. Sorry! I suppose people would get used to it in time though and to those that knew him it would just be his name iykwim. Personally I would be a little concerned about teasing at school. Why not put it on the shortlist and see how you feel when he's here. I had some unusual names on my list but when dd arrived none of them seemed right and ended up with something fairly classic that really suits her. :-)

SunbathingintheRain · 19/01/2013 19:42

Retcher. Sorry.

ZooAnimals · 19/01/2013 19:47

No, it's really awful.

'Reach' means being sick and 'reach around' means.....well here is the definition from wikitionary 'Manual stimulation of a sexual partner's genitals during anal or vaginal intercourse from behind.'

MrsMushroom · 19/01/2013 19:47

Tally I think you mean "Retching" actually.

ZooAnimals · 19/01/2013 19:50

MrsMushroom in some parts it's reaching, probably an accent thing making retching become reaching.

TallyGrenshall · 19/01/2013 20:50

MrsMushroom I mean reaching, where I grew up it is retching, where I moved to it is reaching

It's regional innit

Shattereddreams · 19/01/2013 20:56

You are kidding right? Are you a troll?

It's the name of Tom cruise latest film.

Shattereddreams · 19/01/2013 20:59

To add
Lee child is the author of a series of books about Jack Reacher. Excellent series if you like crime thriller with guns in.

Tom cruise bought the rights to make a film.

Pretty much all of Lee childs fan base are horrified. There is a Facebook page about how shit Tom cruise is and how Lee Child sold his soul to the devil.

mathanxiety · 19/01/2013 22:15

On top of everything else, it rhymes with teacher.

ZooAnimals · 19/01/2013 22:30

and preacher.

NellyBluth · 19/01/2013 22:35

Absolutely terrible. No.

MacaroniAndWalnut · 19/01/2013 22:43

All that but 'reaching' : stretching out to grab something. It's just not a nice thing to 'be' is it? Reaching

Just feels a bit futile and like hard work Y'know?

If you're going to use a random word as a name there are far nicer words with more positive connotations

Ham69 · 19/01/2013 22:46

My immediate thought was being sick also. Sorry, it's awful.
