Or any off the other spellings around these names.

Thoughts please?

We are in scotland

I wouldn't go for Murren unless you don't mind the assumption that it's a place name. It's a Swiss alpine village, where downhill skiing originated as a sport and which holds the Inferno race.

bluer · 19/01/2013 10:54

Merran or merryn?

forgetmenots · 19/01/2013 12:11

Like Mirren and Murren. Also Mirin (the original saints name I think).
Getting more popular but people outside of Scotland won't have heard of it much ime. Very elegant.

Not keen on Mirran/Murran or any 'y' spellings but not sure why.

Muirann

Astley · 19/01/2013 16:13

Mirin, I know one here. Lovely name. That's the saints spelling

janek · 19/01/2013 16:19

My ILs neighbours' daughter is muireann (i think...). In ireland.

Mellygrump · 19/01/2013 17:30

I really like it but be prepared for all the comments about supporting a certain Scottish football team!

peggyblackett · 19/01/2013 17:34

Love these names. Also love Morven.

FoofFighter · 19/01/2013 17:35

Like Mirren. Someone in the town called their baby girl that over Xmas (I read the baby announcements for name ideas Blush )

forgetmenots · 19/01/2013 17:46

Ooh Peggy - Morven and Morvern also lovely, good shout!

Lafaminute · 19/01/2013 17:48

I know a Muireann (pronounced Merrin) but people are never sure how it's pronounced.

Umlauf · 23/01/2013 11:18

Where I live (Spanish Basque Country) Miren is a v popular name and I love it. In the Spamish accent it's even prettier, sort of 'mee..rrrren' with the rolling r and the e pronounced fully and not just as a schwa iykwim. Have been toying with it as a name for currently cooking do but not sure how it would be pronounced in English.

weegiemum · 23/01/2013 11:25

My dc have 2 friends called Muirean and we know a Mirren. The Gaelic spelling of the (originally male) name is Meadhran.

If you live in the West of Scotland you'll know it's a football team in Paisley!

I think it's pretty but would be put off using it as it is in my mind a boys name!

I saw someone suggested Morven. What about Morna? (means 'beloved' in Gaelic).

amck5700 · 23/01/2013 11:30

My personal view is that it can be a bit "schemey" depending on where you are and I wouldn't pick it for that reason.

Morven is nicer as is Morna as suggested or Lorna maybe

forgetmenots · 23/01/2013 11:38

Really amck? I wouldn't have thought that, interesting! I thought it was quite posh (I'm not a ned, honest!)

amck5700 · 23/01/2013 11:46

forget, maybe it is just me then, I only know two and they are both rougher families......and I'm not being posh-est here :o I was brought up in a really rough area in a similar type family - well maybe working class back then as opposed to long term benefit class. Bethany is a name that seems to be liked on here too and it has the same vibe for me, as I say, just based on my local experience.

forgetmenots · 23/01/2013 13:00

Genuinely interesting though, because it shows you how different the sensibilities are. I agree on Bethany Grin

amck5700 · 23/01/2013 13:14

Ha Ha....and dare I mention Caitlyn and Molly in the same vein?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 23/01/2013 16:07

Morwenna? Cornish not Scottish but nice name.

forgetmenots · 23/01/2013 16:22

You may dare :)
