Do you think Cat would be ok as a name in its own right?

I don't like Catherine/Catrina or any of the names that are usually shortened to Cat. But I really like just Cat...

No. Fine for a nn but not stand alone.

lightrain · 15/01/2013 20:14

I think it would need to be a nickname. I'm not usually of that opinion with names but Cat is just too short for me. What about the Scottish spelling - Catriona?

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 15/01/2013 20:16

Other names that could be shortened to Cat:

Caterina
Kathleen
Catriona
Caitlin

BikeRunSki · 15/01/2013 20:19

I don't think she'd thank you if you didn't give her a Catherine/Katrina/Kathleen/Catrin etc option.

The Cat (nn for Catherine ) I know is married to a Tom Grin !

Bakingtins · 15/01/2013 20:56

No. Fine as a NN.

OkayHazel · 15/01/2013 21:04

Catrin!

ajandjjmum · 15/01/2013 21:07

I think Catrin is lovely.

sunnysunnyshine · 15/01/2013 21:11

Looks like its back to the drawing board then... I've looked at all of the names that can be shortened to Cat and there are none that I love.

I'm running out of bloomin time...

Cataleya, the name of the girl in the 2011 film Colombiana.

tammytoby · 16/01/2013 11:21

Cat? Seriously? How about Dog?

DeTamble · 18/01/2013 13:53

I really like Cat, I would call a child that, but a boy for me. Now I am left to find a boys name which Cat could pass as a nickname for.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 21/01/2013 15:17

Katya
Catalina

Yfronts · 23/01/2013 22:00

Kitty? Kit

Viviennemary · 23/01/2013 22:03

I wouldn't call a child just 'Kat'. I don't even like it much as a shortened name. But absolutely not for a name.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 23/01/2013 22:27

Maybe 'Cat' as part of a name? A place name?

Catterlen (UK)
Catterline (UK)

Catalonia (Spain)

Popocatépetl (Mexico)

Alcatraz Grin (US)

forgetmenots · 23/01/2013 22:29

Katniss Grin

I like Catrin too.
Hecate?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 23/01/2013 23:17

Katniss, what a good idea. Simple, striking. Mind you Hecate is inspired!

twinklestar2 · 23/01/2013 23:20

Cate?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 25/01/2013 02:04

At a stretch could be a nn for Tabitha.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 25/01/2013 02:07

Or Thomasina.

HowTerriblyEngliscOfMe · 25/01/2013 02:17

Faline meaning "like a cat" is a name as is Leo meaning "lion".

I dont think Cat is anywhere near as bad as some of things people call their children. If someone can call their kid Peaches, why not Cat? Its pronounced the same as what would call a friend named Katherine as a nickname anyway. Smile
