Hello everyone, my sister is currently expecting and we've been chatting about potential names for a few weeks. Just discovered this and thought we'd ask some (seemingly honest and outspoken!) people for their opinions.

We'd be really grateful for some gut-reactions, knowledge of how popular any of the names currently are or are predicted to be or any connotations/silly nicknames we might not be aware of.

There are potential first names and potential middle names too; the middle names are family names or slightly wacky names that she doesn't love enough/isn't brave enough to use as a first name but would perhaps like to use as a middle name.

Girls names: Sylvia, Edith, Jean, Margo/Margaux, Martha, Nancy, Alba, Nora, Aurelia, Luna, Polly, Mariana, Betsy, Hazel.

Girls middle names: Olive, Thelma, Sabine, Cirrus, Jude, Willa, Beatrix.

Boys names: Stanley, Arthur, Jasper, Arlo, Austen, Herbert, Billy, Dexter, Teddy, Dorian, Roman.

Boys middle names: Mars, James, Jude, Matthew.

Also, the new arrival will have mum's one syllable surname, beginning with W, as another middle name and dad's two syllable surname, beginning with P, as a last name.

Thanks in advance from this new poster!

Girls' names: Sylvia's quite grown-up and sophisticated, as is Edith. Jean's horrid and old-fashioned in a bad way. Margot would be my preference, too. Martha, Betsy and Nancy twee. Alba is unusual - means 'white'. Norah is slightly prettier. Aurelia gorgeous. Luna okay, but still quite a strong Harry Potter connection for me. Polly's okay. Mariana's lovely. Hazel I'm not keen on.

Girls' middle names: No to all of them, even as middle names. Sorry. Beatrix is okay and by far the best of the selection.

Boys' names: Stanley and Arthur are fine, solid names. Jasper and Arlo both sound unpleasant. Jasper sounds like a Disney villain. Austen/Austin is nice. Herbert is fine. Billy, not William? No to it on nickname grounds. Same with Teddy. Dexter, Dorian and Roman - just no. Dexter just means 'right-handed' and why would you call a boy 'Roman'? Hardly inspired. Dorian is also geographical, so same as for Roman.

Boys' middle names: Mars, James, Jude, Matthew: the last three are fine. Mars?? Is he likely to be particularly warlike? Dramatic for the sake of it.

Hope you wanted brutal honesty!

Out of the lot, I'd pick Aurelia Beatrix and Arthur James.
