How would pronounce the name Ayla?

Hi all,
Asked people's view on this name yesterday, so thank you for that, but DH and I disagreed about how people would read it and pronounce it.
We like the version Ayla (as in rhymes with Layla), is this how you would read it or would you read it as Isla.
Other spellings are Aela, Aila or Aayla....

Yes, to rhyme with Layla, and it's a beautiful name. (Would have been my DS's if he had been a DD) :)

AlphaBeta2012 · 11/01/2013 14:47

glad you think it's that way.
I absolutely love it, but if DC2 is a girl don't want to curse her with a name everyone mis-pronounces for the rest of her life!

It's pronounced as eye-lah.

It's a Hebrew name, meaning 'oak tree', and is a variant spelling of Eila.

As someone who is fluent in Hebrew, I would always pronounce this as name as 'eye-lah'.

2tired2bewitty · 11/01/2013 17:23

my friend called ayla pronounces it as tess has advised.

McKayz · 11/01/2013 17:25

My friends DD is called Ayla and they pronounce it Eye-lah like Tess said.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug · 11/01/2013 17:31

I knew an Ayla and it was pronounced eye-la.

Bluestocking · 11/01/2013 17:31

I would pronounce it to rhyme with Layla. I think if you're in an anglophone environment, and you want the name to be pronounced to rhyme with miler (as in four minute miler) then you will have to spell it Isla, which would always be pronounced that way.

blondiedollface · 11/01/2013 17:39

IMO it is a horrid name! And one that has dubious pronunciation whichever way you spell it...

sparklingsea · 11/01/2013 17:46

It is a name used in Turkey with that spelling pronounced eye-la.

AlphaBeta2012 · 11/01/2013 17:53

I think Aela may be better...

I'd have said aisle-a. Or a-la. either way its quite nice.

My rl name is extremely ordinary and no bugger gets it right either. Wouldn't stress on it.

Sleepyfergus · 11/01/2013 18:00

I would pronouce as Isla.

But do you seriously want to saddle your daughter with a name that will be mispronounced and misspelt all her life? Given you've posted twice on MM to canvass opinion and had people provide varying pronunciations and spellings, surely this is an indication of the pitfalls ahead? I just don't get it - sorry!

UterusUterusGhaLaLaLaLaLi · 11/01/2013 18:03

Reading the title, I said both in my head as I wasn't sure, but as someone whose name is mispronounced all the freakin' time, that's no biggie.

(Although my game has become much much much more common in the last 5 years.)

Bunbaker · 11/01/2013 18:05

I would have pronounced it to rhyme with Layla. Just shows how ignorant I am because I have never come across this name before. I think that might be indicative of the reaction you will get.

2kidsintow · 11/01/2013 18:05

This is the name of one of the characters in the Jean M Auel books. I've always read it as eye-la.
I like it, but probably because I've been reading the books for 15 years and have got used to the name.

fatcuntroller · 11/01/2013 18:20

I've never come accross it before but would assume it was eye-la and that you were misspelling isla.

amck5700 · 11/01/2013 18:45

I'd pronounce it eye-la too.

What about Ailsa?

bluebiscuit · 11/01/2013 18:50

She will have people getting it wrong all her life.

The best thing to do would be to name her Layla and use Ayla as a nickname.

twinklestar2 · 12/01/2013 20:49

I would pronounce it to rhyme with Layla. Beautiful name!!

SVN · 13/01/2013 07:43
