What's wrong with Renata and Flavia?

They're both waaaaay down in the 2000's/3000's in the baby names popularity lists for the last few years, is there something wrong with them that I'm missing?

Flavia - is it the coffee machine thing??

Renata - the Renee and Renata association??

I can't think of anything else, Flavia on Strictly isn't a bad association and I like the nickname Ren.

Flavia is nice but I don't like Renata at all.

exexpat · 09/01/2013 20:44

The only people I know called Renata/Renate have been German or Croatian, I don't think of it as a British name at all. And Flavia just triggers memories of 'Flavia est in horto' from my Ecce Romani Latin course a few decades ago.

DitzyDonkeySillyMonkey · 09/01/2013 20:47

I really like Flavia....Daphne Du Maurier dd name! Renata not so much! Are you considering using them??

SweetSaltPopcorn · 09/01/2013 20:57

They're not top of the list but I want something that's unusual but people know how to spell pronounce it!

My parents are German and Italian and I have a very Italian name myself so think I could get away with these sort of names!

Perhaps people think you need some heritage to pull them off. I have met 0 flavias and about 6 renatas from eastern Europe.

Leafmould · 09/01/2013 21:37

P.s., I think I put Fabia on my list

hermioneweasley · 09/01/2013 21:37

"save your love my darling save your love"

That is what I think when I hear "renata"

SweetSaltPopcorn · 09/01/2013 21:40

Fabia, Felicia and Octavia have been forever stolen by Skoda. I love Octavia. Stupid Skoda.

Yeah I've met 2 Flavias one Italian, one German which makes me think I coul get away with it!

Do you pronounce it Flaaaaah-via or Flav (to rhyme with have) -ia?

I love it with the first pronunciation, not so much with the second, how do most people pronounce it?

hermioneweasley Yes! That's the Renee and Renata song! Oh just Googled it, apparently it's Renee and Renato!

"Save your love for Roma and for meeeeee"

Renata is v club singer in Benidrom circa 1974.

Flavia also reminds me of my early Latin lessons.

SomersetONeil · 10/01/2013 00:00

I'm not that familiar with Renata, but think of Renate (pronounced the same way, at least if you're Anglo) as a middle-aged name.

Flavia would be pronounced Flav-ia by most Anglos, so if you don't like that so much, it might not be ideal.

I don't love either name.

I recently met a 24YO old Mareike and think it's a gorgeous name, esp if you have a German connection. But she said when she lived in the UK, she got all sorts of weird and wonderful pronunciations.

sonnieboo · 10/01/2013 11:10

Flavia is a gorgeous, beautiful, feminine name to my ears that sounds great in most languages! No idea what coffee connection you mean...

Renata reminds me of Renate, a very common middle aged German name, which I'm not that keen on.

LadyMargolotta · 10/01/2013 11:33

Renata is not pretty at all. Flavia, of course, is lovely.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2013 05:43

I love them both.

MrsHoarder · 11/01/2013 05:59

They both sound like chemicals you would find in processed food to me.

Add die Octavia, surely you could only use out for your 8th child anyway?Wink

monica77798 · 11/01/2013 09:59

I was thinking more of, Halo Mutter, Halo Vater, Tag Andreas, Tag Renata. I don't know why but I have a strong aversion to Flavia. Don't particularly like either name if I'm honest.

StellaNova · 11/01/2013 10:14

Etiam in pictura est altera puella, nomine Flavia

Grin

There should be an Ecce Romani naming thread for those looking for classical names - Cornelia, Flavia, Aurelia, Cornelius, Sextus, Davus...can't remember any others.

badtime · 11/01/2013 11:39

...Marcus.

OP, I say Flaaa-via, but I think it might be a regional vowel thing (like dance and bath), where some people will say Flav-, some Flaaav- and some Flaahv-.

Use my favourite name, Ilaria.

evamummy · 11/01/2013 11:40

I think Flavia is a lovely name!

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/01/2013 13:29

I think Flavia is lovely and probably quite usable in the UK due to the dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, a surprising cross section of the population would be able to say it.

Not sure about Renata though, makes me think of grandmothers for some reason.

MadBusLady · 12/01/2013 18:26

I love both. I would pronounce the first syllable of Flavia to rhyme with "have", which I'm pretty sure is also the pronunciation they use on Strictly, so that is the one I think you'd get.
