Most retro/dated name you've heard recently

I heard a woman in the park calling her little girl Madge. I haven't heard that name in years and years. I also know of a little toddler called Sheila.

Just wondering if any of you know any children with names that you thought had died out completely.

Christine and Valerie are lovely names that have a beautiful sound to them imo. I'm less keen on Mavis of Jacquie though.

Agree that the real retro names are those of our parents generation that are underused at the moment. I actually know a little Patricia!

Jux · 10/01/2013 11:29

Enid

I think it sounds horrid, ugly. The little girl was cute though.

jellybeans · 10/01/2013 11:29

Patsy
Margeret

jellybeans · 10/01/2013 11:30

Edith as well

tammytoby · 10/01/2013 11:31

Is Patsy short for Patricia?

notjustamummythankyou · 10/01/2013 11:31

I know two Mavises, an Enid and a couple of Stanleys. Oh, and a Misty (retro in a 1970s way, rather than a 1930s way).

Retro names are really in fashion. DD is year 6 and has a Maud in her class, also further down the school we have Reggie, Arthur, Lulabelle (?), Isadora, Jemimah, George and Noah.

Adam has to be the oldest name going, and it's always popular.

MyDingaling · 10/01/2013 11:33

I have taught a Trevor and a Clifford

jellybeans · 10/01/2013 11:34

As far as I know it is just Patsy.

tammytoby · 10/01/2013 11:35

Patsy is cute and would be a nice alternative to Pat.

turkeyboots · 10/01/2013 11:37

I met a baby Alan while on holiday.

VisualiseAHorse · 10/01/2013 11:37

I know a toddler called Julia.

Quenelle · 10/01/2013 11:39

So are we due a new generation of babies called Gary soon?

msteeth · 10/01/2013 11:42

I know girls called Evelyn, Edith, Matilda, Gladys, Beryl (who is v elegant so gives style to the name); I also know a Mabel, but spelt and pronounced Maybel.

No Ethels or Thelmas yet but I'm sure they will soon return...

Boys' names still quite trad round our way (lots of Toms). Brian quite normal in Ireland, but pronounced Bree-an.

NotGeoffVader · 10/01/2013 11:51

Evadne

TessOfTheBaublevilles · 10/01/2013 11:52

Stella (from page 4); my 3-year old daughter is Sarah and I know of a family in our village who recently named their baby daughter (born in November) Sarah too.

As of 2011, it was still a Top 100 name, but nearer to the bottom than the top these days.

Sarah and Elizabeth are the only two girl names that have been in the Top 100 every year since the lists were first produced in the late 19th century, so that makes Sarah timeless in my eyes.

The most 'retro' name I've heard used recently is Douglas.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/01/2013 12:00

Wayne. Oooh, and a Colin. And a Derek.
Still can't get my head around the baby Derek.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/01/2013 12:03

Have met a baby Donna, the Mum wanted something unusual Hmm, a baby Gemma and even a baby Brian.

Wishfulmakeupping · 10/01/2013 12:08

Donna wow Hmm Well it is unusual I suppose

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/01/2013 12:09

The thing that really made me laugh was she had a brother called Peter, or should that be Doner and Pita?

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 10/01/2013 12:14

None of the Brians I know in Ireland were Bree-an. The only time it's pronounced Bree-an is when it's a sur name surely? like o'briain ?

But yeah, names very trad here compared with england. my children's age group, all the names like Michael, David, Andrew are still used.

stleger · 10/01/2013 12:18

DD2 (who is 16) has a Bree-an in school (in Cork). Cork names are retro - my kids are 16 -21, friends include two Keiths, Graham, Peter, Barry, Alison, Gillian, Karen, Claire. In primary school dd1 had 3 Adams and 2 Aarons in her class, so maybe a bit of variety is a good thing. I have an old lady name, much loves on names threads, I detest it!

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 10/01/2013 12:21

Graham and Barry! oh yuck. (sorry to anybody who is married to a graham or a barry)

isn't if funny how the difference between barry and harry is only one letter? barry is so universally hated but harry is so mainstream it is just harry, no comment.

NorhamGardens · 10/01/2013 12:26

Know a lower primary Theodora-Angelica - not quite sure how you'd describe that - partly retro partly?
