I had considered Poppy for dc1 but turned out to be a ds, since then it has become hugely popular in England, I'm from Ireland and have only ever met one. Does anyone know if it is very popular in Ireland. Would you use it, has it become chavvy(I hate to use that wordBlush)

Thanks

Don't know about in Ireland, but I think it's a lovely name. Although I'm a teacher and typing my school reports one year I kept mistyping 'Poppy' as 'Poopy'!

Ficidy · 06/01/2013 00:00

I live in Dublin and my neighbour has a daughter called Poppy, but she's the only one I've ever heard of here. She's 4. I don't think it's a very popular name in Ireland, to be honest.

Poppy is not in top 100 baby names of Ireland from 2006-2011. :) hope that helps

I don't like it, I'm afraid.

OkayHazel · 06/01/2013 16:51

Cats name to me.

Think of Poppy from Playdays.

CPtart · 06/01/2013 16:56

I think it's a bit wet to be honest, too cutesy for me.

amandine07 · 06/01/2013 18:18

I love Poppy it's a cute name but not just for a small baby- I know a 35 yr old Poppy and it suits her perfectly, she's always been known as Pops!
She's a very successful teacher.
Personally I think names are no predictor of whether a child will be successful later in life, rich or whatever.
Go with what you and your partner really like, don't think too much about what others have chosen.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 06/01/2013 18:21

I only know one, who is under one. I like it. Saying it is a cats name is rediculous. I have a cat called Phoebe bit I would never say "its a cats name" on the other thread talking about Phoebe. I know one cat called Phoebe.

SomersetONeil · 06/01/2013 18:59

Not to my taste at all. Very popular. I don't think it really matters whether a name is popular or not in your specific area; if it's popular overall, it still dates to that era...

Nobody remembers whether there were lots of Joannes in area X compared with area Y, they just associate Joanne with 70s/80s children.

Having said that, as I've just said on another thread, if you love the name, that's all that really matters.

Rindercella · 06/01/2013 19:03

I think it's a bit meh, but if you like it, go for it.

I always associate the name Poppy with horses as I once knew a horse called Poppy. I just think that's what people know: names normally have a specific association to people

goodygumdrops · 06/01/2013 20:43

Love it, so pretty.

OkayHazel · 07/01/2013 01:26

GoldPlated Sorry you misunderstood. MY cat's name is Poppy.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 07/01/2013 01:45

I like it for a little girl but I'm a bit undecided for an adult... it's a little bit twee I think. Having said that, I like Daisy so.... Grin

BinarySolo · 07/01/2013 06:59

I know 2 little girls called Poppy. I think it's one of those names like Alfie or Ruby where it becomes a popular pet and baby name at the same time. I don't dislike it but would worry if I shouted it in the park I'd have at least 2 kids and 3 Labradors respond!

jessjessjess · 07/01/2013 07:09

I love ig

jessjessjess · 07/01/2013 07:09

It, even!

Pickles77 · 07/01/2013 07:12

I don't care if I out myself I currently have 4mo baby Poppy all snuggled up next to me.
Nothing else would have suited.
She's a Pops, but my dad is Pops too (my Irish friends call their father Pops) but she has lots of nicknames Grin

sonnieboo · 07/01/2013 11:58

As you're looking for (honest) opinions, I'd have to say no, I wouldn't use it. It sounds too cutesy (like Poppet or Puppy) whilst at the same time being only one letter away from Poopy.

Imo there are far nicer, more elegant girls' names around. But the main thing is that you choose a name YOU love, not us Smile.

sonnieboo · 07/01/2013 11:59

It will also not travel well into other languages, which may or may not bother you, of course.

cookb788 · 07/01/2013 22:53

I absolutely love Poppy however with the surname Cook, can't stop thinking poppycock!! So sad we can't call our daughter poppy! Was thinking about Polly instead now!! Very similar and not that popular!!

atthewelles · 08/01/2013 16:32

I live in Dublin and I don't know of any children called Poppy. It really isn't a common name here at all - very nice though.

Kaekae · 08/01/2013 22:54

very popular where I am....I think this site populates a name, hence why I never put up a name on here I like anymore!

3smellysocks · 08/01/2013 23:51

I know 2 very lovely ones
