How common is Edward?

Really struggling to find a boys name dh and me both like. Edward is a possibility, but I don't want anything too common. Is this a fairly common name now?

I like slightly unusual names (but not odd), would like my ds to be the only one with that name, that we know. Any suggestions welcome.

It's about 40 in the charts so not mega popular but I wouldn't expect to not meet another (I know 2 little Edwards)...

Edmund is much less common, same with Edwin, although I really like Edward.

Mine (7 yeaterday) is an edward but he hates it and we use a dimun. We dont know any others so dont think it is too popular

cocoachannel · 04/01/2013 15:34

I know four born in 2012, so quite popular here (SW London).

ponchopink · 04/01/2013 15:36

Gorgeous classic, not a name to regret.

cocoachannel · 04/01/2013 15:40

I should say all four are gorgeous babies and it is a strong, classic name, which I love.

Annianni · 04/01/2013 16:02

I've got an Eddie, he's the only one in his school and the only others we know are grown-ups.

zenoushka · 04/01/2013 16:11

I love the name Edward for a boy - an absolute classic.

Panzee · 04/01/2013 16:14

Ederick. You won't find many of those.

amck5700 · 04/01/2013 17:11

I like Edgar.

thegreylady · 04/01/2013 18:35

I have a 3 year old dgs named Edward and he's the only one I know.

notjustamummythankyou · 05/01/2013 19:24

My 3yo ds is Edward - I know just one other, and his name is always shortened to Eddie. Great name!

UniS · 05/01/2013 19:30

Classic but not very common. Good chance he won't be the only Edward in the school, but he is unlikely to be one of 4 Edwards in the same year group.

monsterchild · 05/01/2013 19:38

We named our new Ds Eamonn, which is Irish for Edward. And he's very cute!
I don't know any Edwards who aren't adults, so I think it's fairly uncommon now.

HoratiaWinwood · 05/01/2013 19:57

Not common enough IMHO.

High on my list for hypothetical dc3.

I also like Edmund and Edgar which are less popular.

Bear in mind that even the top name each year goes to less than 0.5% of the year's babies. Edward at 40 is more likely to share a birthday with a classmate than a name.

sheeplikessleep · 05/01/2013 21:25

I love Edward, there are 3 in Ds1 reception year (48 kids), so to me quite commonly used here (south)

Isaidhangonamin · 05/01/2013 21:30

My DS sailed through school as the only Edward - he's now 21 and gorgeous with it Wink

ArtigeneAuberchoke · 05/01/2013 21:34

I have two school aged DCs and have never met a little Edward (we are in London). We know several Teddies andntgeir fullnames may be Edward. Also know a Ned. We are considering it for DC3 although we also like Edgar.

catinsantasboots · 05/01/2013 21:35

My nephew (2.3) is Edward.

He is never Ed, Eddie or Ted.

FellowshipOfFineFellows · 05/01/2013 21:40

My son is Edward, he is 4. Named after his Dad. It suits him. He gets called Eddie mostly. Only one in his school.

I love it. But I'm biased Wink

PepperPotts · 05/01/2013 21:42

We have an 18 month old Edward, known as Teddy.
I don't know any others but do know another Teddy (Theodore)

Lovely name!

poorbuthappy · 05/01/2013 21:46

I know 3, my dad 70 yrs old and 2 Teds both under 6.

Great name. Grin

Rosyisgonnabeamummy · 05/01/2013 21:59

My hubby is Edward. Ed to me. Eddie to work mates. Edward to his mum
