Would you assume someone with this name was male or female?

Sirzy · 02/01/2013 22:30

Probably female?

Don't like it for either though!

lovedimsum · 02/01/2013 22:31

I've never heard of this name before--- male?

CoteDAzur · 02/01/2013 22:34

Female.

CoteDAzur · 02/01/2013 22:35

It means fortune (fate).

seeker · 02/01/2013 22:36

Female. But dd and her friends, although they love her, secretly laugh at her name. Please don't do it.

littleducks · 02/01/2013 23:07

Female.....but honestly don't, its like naming your child 'Karma'

CoteDAzur · 02/01/2013 23:14

Also, you will never get anyone to pronounce it correctly since they will all say Kiss-met. And that's because it's not spelled with an "i" but with a letter that doesn't exist in the English alphabet.

JollyOldChristmas · 02/01/2013 23:15

Male.

I would say Kiz-met.

WeeWeeWeeAllTheWayHome · 02/01/2013 23:16

I'd have said male.

sausagesandwich34 · 02/01/2013 23:18

I would say female owing to the fact that she is a character in the superman comics

not that I have inherited comic book geek from my dad, honest!

OrangeLily · 02/01/2013 23:18

I would assume restaurant. It's the name of a restaurant in Edinburgh that is famous for it's a killer curry eating competitions. Last one ended up with people hospitalised!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2013 23:18

I would assume their parents were a bit stupid - sorry but I would. Boy or girl - I would say that any parent considering it wouldn't care if it was a boys' name or a girls' name anyway and would just use it as a one size fits all 'cause, "we're so groovy - check us with our out there name."

Pancakeflipper · 02/01/2013 23:20

It's Kismet.

No.

CoteDAzur · 02/01/2013 23:20

It is actually an "old woman" name. Obviously not a friendly one to Anglophone ears, though Smile

DrRanj · 02/01/2013 23:21

We had an Indian take away near us called the kismet.

I'd assume it was a cat to be honest, sorry.

MeerkatMerkin · 02/01/2013 23:26

"No."

Grin Your bluntness made me smile Pancake!

I thought it was quite nice for a boy and because of its Persian roots goes with my other DC's name really well. Even thought from this perspective it sounded quite classic Shock but I can see I may be mistaken/mad/stupid.

Good thing I'm not pregnant yet really, the hormones would take me to a new level of name craziness! Grin

Persian origins? Kismet is a Turkish word (see dictionary.com, merriam-webster.com etc). And it's definitely a girl's name. Sorry Smile

It's a pretty word but not a name IMO.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2013 23:59

For some reason, I feel it would be a fantastic name for a parrot.

HappyNewSkyebluesapphire · 03/01/2013 00:04

I also had a pony called Kismet.

Kismet means destiny.

I would personally never call a child Kismet but each to their own

Cote, it is Qismat in Farsi (my family are from Iran) so yes I suppose it is only Persian if the original spelling is retained - still love the word though!

Remus I will duly look into parrot ownership based on your feeling. If it's the only same way I can use the name I may just have to! Grin
