Is Bathsheba useable?

That's it really. Yes, get the King David story, naked roof-bathing and Thomas Hardy and all that.

So the question is: could a RL person carry off this name?

I'm a teacher and every September the staff room is full of 'can you believe they would name their child that?', the child always has to look embarassed in front of the people who should be their new friends as they correct pronunctiation or ask for an alternative shortened version etc. You really need to consider the label they have for the rest of their life, in every situation, rather than a quirky preference you have at the moment.

SneezySnatcher · 03/01/2013 21:35

It reminds me of the teacher who had an affair with her student in 'Notes on a Scandal' - she was Bathsheba.

JingleBellaTheGymnast · 03/01/2013 21:38

Might I be so bold as to suggest Beulah?

BoerWarKids · 03/01/2013 21:41

I was going to point out Notes on a Scandal, excellent novel!

She shortens it to Sheba, which I prefer.

nkf · 03/01/2013 21:41

It is lovely. Absoluely lovely. But it will take some nerve to do it. For me, it is totally easy to pronounce and I'm surprised at people who find it such a no no.

"I have danced at your skittish heels, my beautiful Bathsheba for many a long mile and many a long hour..."

Lovely name. Are you going to use it?

As other posters have said, absolutely not unless you are painfully hip and/or rilly, rilly good looking.

seeker · 03/01/2013 22:00

It is a name- but one which many people now associate with cat food.

And Bathsheba, unless I'm misremembering, was a pretty nothing sort of character. Wife of someone, wife of someone else, mother of someone.

WifeofPie · 03/01/2013 22:01

Oi! My DD is called Whiskas Angry.

Yes, well, my ds is called Chum. That's how I know naming children after pet food is a bad idea!Grin

As I said, I know it's a name. However it is a name that is now inextricably linked with cat food.

Sheba is a million times better than Bathsheba, even with the cat food connection. Felix is very popular despite being just as pet food related.

Rhubarbgarden · 03/01/2013 22:42

I rather like it. Even though I usually go for short, non-frilly names. I think it's rather beautiful.

ODearMe · 03/01/2013 22:43

A friend of a friend is called this. It is unusual but it suits her. Everyone calls her 'Bash' x

sasamaxx · 03/01/2013 22:48

I love it - Bathsheba Everdine - a great literary name, and Sheba reminds me of Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. not catfood.
great name!
