I have my little girl lily, weve always loved lily and isabella but when lily was born, she looks more like a lily. Lily is one and a half now and in the meantime my partners cousin has had a little girl and called her isabella. Now im pregnant again and if its a girl i really want to call her isabella but my partners putting the foot down saying its stupid to have two babys in one family with the same name but his cousin lives about 3hours away and we never ever see her so i dont see the problem. Am i being unreasonable!? Or should i fight my cornor?

Call her Isabella. It's a beautiful name and has absolutely nothing to do with your partners cousin what you name your baby. One could say you thought of it first anyway. But you don't need to turn it into a fight . Just do what you want to do and be happy!

I'm sure there was a thread a while ago where someone had named their dd Isabella but then a cousin was also named Isabella. The OP was seething about it.

Sorry that wasn't much help at all, you could ask the cousin if they'd be ok with this. They could have different nicknames too; izzy and bella.

I Would want my dd to have a different name to a family member a similar age. You know they will always say YOU copied them no matter if you thought of it first as hey got there first!

There are so many beautiful names..

If you rarely see your cousin then I'd say go for it! I have cousins I see once a year or so! What difference does it make in such cases. If you are close, then def not.

Isabella is very very popular now though if that bothers you? Both my dds have 3 Isabella's in their class!!!

If you never see the cousin, I don't think it matters that your children have the same name. My dad has a lot of siblings, I wouldn't recognize some of my cousins if I passed them on the street! And anyway, your child and the cousin's child will be second cousins which is a pretty distant relationship. It was no doubt very common in past generations when it seems there was a smaller pool of names that people choose from.

It's a beautiful name and goes well with lily. If you don't see the cousin that often I'd say go with it Grin

Snowflakepie · 30/12/2012 23:34

If you don't see them, and they will have different surnames, then I would go for it. Other extended family members might comment but all you need to say is that you've always liked it, and it suited your baby. They'll get over it. Go with your heart.

BadRoly · 30/12/2012 23:37

I have a Lily and an Isabella Grin beautiful names IMO!

How close are you to the cousin realistically? Are the 2 babies ever likely to be together often as they grow up? My sil has named 2 of her boys for family members (inc dh) and it doesn't seem to cause any problems or confusion...

Clouise1626 · 02/01/2013 22:35

Thanks for the replies. My partners second cousin has just had a little girl and named her isabella so theres already two in the family! Just my luck, i think ill need to find other names to go well with my little lily and get over isabella, maybe it will be less popular when i have my third! Hehe :)

My dd is a Lily (well Lilian) and for a while her best friend was an Isabelle. If you think that your potential Isabella is likely to end up as an Izzy then they are in my opinion a bit too samey. Plus of course as you are finding it is very popular right now.

Arabella or Isadora etc might be possible. I actually think they would go better with Lily, as there would be fewer repeated sounds.
