Shortened name on the birth certificate?

Struggling to find names that OH and I agree on, we like the following but I'm unsure of using shortened versions of a name on the birth certificate. OH does not like the full version of the names.

Alfie (Alfred)
Vinnie (Vincent)
Xander (Alexander)

Looking for thoughts on this? TIA

I think its perfectly ok to have the shortened version on BC!
I've got an Alfie and thats wat ive registered here him as.....

My dd has what MN considers a nickname, the shortened version of Abigail whch I really don't like

Its never been a problem, although the odd teacher does insist on using the full 'proper' name Hmm

I have a name like this and tbh it is a bit annoying having to correct people. I sometimes think it would have been easier to name me the common "long version" of my name. Plus it gives you more options as a grown up... When Xander is trying to find his own identity in teens or 20s he might like to experiment with Alex, Ali, Al, Lex etc

I wouldn't personally use the short form on a birth certificate.

Viviennemary · 30/12/2012 13:48

I don't agree with short forms on birth certificates. I think it's wrong.

HoratiaWinwood · 30/12/2012 13:54

I wouldn't. People will assume the full name is on the BC whether it is or not, and will use it if they are arseholes. So if you really dislike the long form, that could be an issue, and if you don't dislike it, why not use it?

We discounted Charlie because we didn't like Charles enough to put it on the BC. That was the right decision for us.

Ds1 has the longer name on his bc and we use a nn at all times.

Ds2 on the otherhand has a shortened version on the bc as we didn't like the longer name. He does get some people lenghtening it when he was younger but less so now.

DD has a short version, we disliked all the longer names so went with that. I still think it is a name that could fit anyone in any job etc. It's your choice, if you don't like the long names don't do it! I did get a few comments along the lines of 'is that her real name' but they got met with a 'yes', and that was that. They will be able to use any name they fancy as they get older, and it is something that other generations did a lot. DHs grandad was always known as Jack, and it only came out at his funeral that his given name was William John.

Why do you think is it wrong Viviennemary?

I don't like the short forms on BCs. I don't really know why, it just seems lazy or too casual for such a formal document.

I have one DC who has been known by one of the short forms of his name since birth. The long version is on his BC though, and I like the long version and many of the other short forms.

For what it's worth, I have an easily shortened name. My mum has always called me the long version, I used several of the shorter versions during school/uni/early career, and am now back to using the full version :) I wouldn't have liked being called the short versions on my BC - too restricting.
