I'm always drawn to this name but worry its a bit 1980's. would Thomasina on the BC be better?

I think Tamsin is a fairly timeless/dateless name, like Kirsten or Emma. I don't really associate it with any age group.

And it is pretty and feminine without being twee and cutesy, and not over-used. All plus points in my book.

Could someone clarify how you pronounce Thomasina for me please? I seem to remember it is not how it looks, but I can't remember how.

I don't think dated is automatically bad. If you find a name that is out of fashion that you like then use it. I liked Jillian and Melanie and they were on my list. I liked that they were normal, pretty, they would have been unusual but recognised.

Tamsin I like fwiw. Thomasina I don't like whether it's in fashion right now or not.

Well I am one, so probably biased, but I love having this name.

Unusual but easy to spell!

I really like Tamsin, Thomasina not so much.

I have only known one of each in my whole life I think, and both are lovely people so that makes it easy for me to think positively about the names iyswim.

The only negative (for her) was a bit of sniggering at the nickname Tammy at school by some of the more stupid boys. They grew out of it and old friends still call her Tammy now, but in work/her DH etc all call her Tams for the shortened version.

Admittedly biased!
I have a delightful DD Thomasine for long/best, but known universally as Tamsin...
But then I liked Hardy's girls names, thought Eustacia and Bathsheba a bit much though ;)

I would consider Tamsin for my next dd...if I were having a fourth dd, that is!

Tamsin has been steadily declining in popularity since 1996 when it was #271 in England and Wales (137 babies). In 2011 it was #692 (56 babies). Tamara has also declined in this period, going from #116 (397 babies) to #449 (94 babies). The popularity of Thomasina has remained consistently low with on average three babies being called this per year in this period.

I do like Tamsin and other names beginning with Tam, but that's mainly coz I love Tammy as a nickname.

You could just call her Tammy (#364 in 1996 (92 babies); #1665 in 2011 (17 babies)) but maybe you share my uneasiness at putting nicknames on birth certificates.

I love it, but the Tamsins I knew all got nicknamed Tampax, so that's worth considering.

I personally love Tamsin and Tamara though.

Tamsin is a nice name and pretty timeless.
I went to school with one, who's now about 46. The one in DDs year is 14
