lovely name but my husband vetoed as he said it was too poncy (he does come from deprived area though). kids said they would have been bullied at school - so depends where you live

Wouldn't be bullied here - lots of cleric and Welsh names about.

It seems to be popular in states but not here.

It reminds me of the naughty younger brother in All Creatures Great and Small. (shows age)

He was a bit of a cad and not very bright.

I wanted to call my son tristan ( hes now 16) but dad said it was too poncy, still wish I hadnt given in

my cousins lad is called Trystan. love it. i have been teaching for 9 years and only ever taught one. he was a gorgeous little boy and not at all 'poncy!' just a normal little down to earth gorgeous little boy. if it suits him-go for it!

Tristan contains triste = sad in French. That would put me off a little. But I can't see what other children would find teaseworthy..?

I don't think a name can really be 'poncy' because as soon as lots of people start using it, associations quickly change. In other words, a person 'makes' his name, not the other way round.

I know loades! 4 under 2's. maybe it depends on the area.

It ilicits strong reactions & deep stereotypes, some folk loathe it.
My next DS has the most boring & widespread name imaginable, make of that what you will.

I vaguely know of 2 others same age as DS, and another about 2yo.

The 'sad' part would put me of, I'm afraid. Otherwise it is nice and not overused.

I am not a fan of this name. I agree that it does sound a bit poncy. Maybe that will change as it becomes more popular though.

What makes a name 'poncy'?! The fact that it is unusual, the fact that it has two syllables, the fact that it ends in n? I honestly don't get this concept of 'ponciness'..
