Is Sophie a nickname?

I'm due in May and so far Sophie is the frontrunner for a girl. But is it a "nickname"? Do people usually put Sophia on the birth certificate?

No. It is not a nickname. It's something like one is the Greek and one the French (presumably ia being Greek).

Lovely name. Go for it. If you are in the UK, I know a million Sophia's (it feels like literally, there were four in a singing class with about 10 girls). I don't know any Sophie's other than one adult.

No it's not a nickname, but it is a cutesy little girl name. Sophia is nicer and suits grown women much better, though it is becoming over popular.

Leafmould · 17/12/2012 19:33

No Sophie is not a nickname.

Other people have already mentioned it, but it is the second most popular name for girls currently. So be ready for 3 other Sophies in her class at school.

This bothers some people, but not others, but I think it's good to be aware of it before you decide. Hope your pg goes well.

I love the name Sophie.
I only know one, she is in her early 20's.
I prefer Sophie to Sophia.

1978andallthat · 17/12/2012 19:47

I love it. I think Sophia is much more popular these days than Sophie but I prefer the name Sophie.

Leafmould · 17/12/2012 19:51

In 2010 there were 2000-odd Sophias born compared to 4000-odd Sophies.

I think there is a site you can go on to see regional variations in name popularity.

Northey · 17/12/2012 19:52

Sophonisba? Go on...

Leafmould · 17/12/2012 19:53

In England and wales. P.s. got that of this great site dark greener

CheerfulYank · 17/12/2012 22:07

Thanks! :)

I'm not in the UK; I'm American. It's quite popular here too but I don't know if it is in my region or not. I'll have to check it out.

No Sophie isn't a nickname.

CheerfulYank · 17/12/2012 22:25

Apparently Sophia, Sophie, and Sofia were all in the top 100 in my state last year. Sigh...but it's the only name I really like. Plus, I have a Sam, so I wasn't overly worried about popularity with him. :)

Sophie is not a nickname.

Personally, it is a lot softer than Sophia, I'm not overly keen on the name. It also goes better with Sam (Biased views though as I have both).

blameitonthecaffeine · 17/12/2012 23:02

In the US Sophia is massively more popular than Sophie. The opposite to over here. Both names in their own right though and both lovely.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/12/2012 23:06

We chose Sophia 5 weeks ago. I hadnt heard of a single Sophia or Sophie around here.

In the same week two other babiies were born in our estate. Another Sophia and a Sophie. :(

Sophie isnt a nickname though!

lidlqueen · 17/12/2012 23:09

I have a Sophie she is 14 now but when she was tiny, I would call her name in the playground and about six little girls would look round....in a way I wish I had chosen Sophia, but either way it means 'wisdom' which is great.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/12/2012 23:14

No I don't think it's a nickname. Sophie and Sophia are different names.

TheWoollybacksWife · 17/12/2012 23:20

My DD is Sophie so I love the name. She is the only one in her year of 100+ girls at senior school and was the only Sophie at her 300+ pupil primary school.

Speaking as the mother of both a Sophie and a Thomas I obviously don't give two hoots about popular names vs something a bit more unusual Grin

Leafmould · 17/12/2012 23:24

Wannabe domestic goddess. . Sophia is a LOVELY name, as is Sophie. I'm sure your dd will make it her own don't be Sad

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/12/2012 23:32

It was the only name that suited her. And even now I couldnt imagine her as anything else. But when every MW came in just after being with a Sophie or Sophia and were saying "Oh another one" etc it was a bit deflating!

Leafmould · 17/12/2012 23:54

Awww bet she's really sweet. Sometimes mw should refrain from commenting about names!
