Only 4 weeks and haven't even told anybody in real life yet so no idea on whether it's a boy or a girl (though I have 5 girls already, not sure if my body does boys ... !)

Please can you give me your (brutally honest!) opinions on these names as well as any other suggestions in a similar vein:

Girls:
Cassandra
Arabella
Jessica
Xanthe
Araminta
Alexis
Vanessa

Boys:
Nicholas
Patrick
Alexander
Isaac
Oscar

i have an isabella and decided that I couldn't have Arabella (for my no 6! born this May) - too. I kind of wish I'd gone for Arabella first, given the popularity these days of Isabella.

I like Beatrice too - have you thought about that? (I also had Matilda on my shortlist).

I went for Cecily in the end which I love. but I know isn't for everyone.

7to25 · 18/12/2012 07:45

How old are your other children?
When we had DC6 we had a family with opinions! It was naming by committee and when we had eliminated all the names people hated we were left with one, now his name!
Do not let the children choose the name, it will be after a TV character or footballer.

IMasticateMincePie · 18/12/2012 07:49

there are lots of lovely names on your list but as your girls already have a lot of 'a's between them, i'd probably go for something that didn't end in -a. Meredith, Christobel, Arabel, Sylvie, Katherine, something like that.

Like all your boys' names apart from Nicholas.

Startail · 18/12/2012 08:33

I love your list.
(Pat-rick cause me a problem simply because DF mum was Pat)

I'm going to throw Ottile, Hester, Harriet into the mix.

I would add Elizabeth, but Isabel has the same roots and meaning.

So many lovely suggestions! Lots to think about, thanks.

7to25 - my children are 14, 12, 9, 6 and 3. I haven't told them I'm pregnant yet because it's so early on and I don't want to upset them if it doesn't work out. I will ask at least the older ones for their opinion though.

My favourites are Jessica and Nicholas :)

I particularly dislike Arabella and Araminta as I think these sound like pasta dishes and Oscar is really over used nowadays (although it is a nice name).

Congratulations on your 6th child btw :o

manicinsomniac · 18/12/2012 10:17

Girls:
Cassandra - really like it
Arabella - love it but maybe not if you have an Isabella. Arabelle is nice
Jessica - love it. I have one.
Xanthe - love it
Araminta - love it but would never dare to use it!
Alexis - love it
Vanessa - quite like it

Boys:
Nicholas - love it. I would have used it if I'd had a boy
Patrick - really like it
Alexander - love it
Isaac - love it
Oscar - like it

Gosh, tough choices there. I think I would go for Jessica or Alexis and Nicholas or Alexander. Also like the suggestions of Christabel and Francesca.

How about:
Alexandra, Anastasia, Clarissa, Camilla, Felicity, Georgina, Joanna, Katherine, Miranda, Ophelia, Philippa
Benjamin, Christian, Frederick, Harrison, Montgomery, Reuben, Samuel, Sebastian, Thomas

baskingseals · 18/12/2012 10:35

congratulations Grin how lovely to have 6

what about Mirabel or Marianne?

really like Nicholas and Alexander from your boys list.

almapudden · 18/12/2012 11:06

Of your girls' names I like Cassandra, Arabella and Xanthe. Only really like Alexander of your boys' choices; Nicholas and Patrick are a bit dull, Oscar is overused at the moment and Isaac, although nice, has a very different feel to your other suggestions.

What about Cassiope or Veronica for a girl?

almapudden · 18/12/2012 11:09

Oh, just seen your children's names, they're lovely. What about Samuel or Alistair for a boy?

I think Georgina would go well with your other girls.

I would have used Nicholas for DS but surname has several 's's so it sounded too hissy. A little part of me whishes I had gone for Nicholai. (I chose another name from your boys list as it happens).

mathanxiety · 19/12/2012 03:52

Vanessa and Xanthe from your girls' list. Lovely and unusual.

I love all your boy names. Alexander is quite popular in my neck of the woods but names are popular for a reason.

MunchkinsMumof2 · 21/12/2012 14:36

What about Sylvie or Cleo, they would go with your other dd's names?

copyandpaste · 24/12/2012 04:02

I literally ONLY like Jessica from your girls :/ boys are better but faves are Patrick and Isaac :)

SnowProbs · 26/12/2012 17:27

I love Alexis, but there are a lot of little Lexis about these days....not sure if that bothers you? Not massively keen on your other girls names. Xanthe is sweet, but not my cup of tea. The rest are quite fussy.

I love Patrick and Nicholas. Isaac is popular but very nice. Alexander is perfectly nice, bit dull though. The world surely doesnt need another Oscar?! :-)

AgathaTrunchbull · 28/12/2012 19:29

Er.. Cecilia is from the Latin 'Caecilia', which has links to 'caecus', meaning blind. Just so you know...

AgathaTrunchbull · 28/12/2012 19:35

Girls:
Cassandra - Nice, although not keen on Cassie.
Arabella - Can't get the very horsey, public schooly girl I went to university with out of my head with this one.
Jessica - Meh. Big, fat meh.
Xanthe - Nice. Means 'yellow' in Greek. Lovely, though.
Araminta - 'Minty'?? Seriously?
Alexis - Alix much nicer.
Vanessa - Meh.

Boys:
Nicholas - Good name, underused.
Patrick - Again, underused and a good, solid name.
Alexander - Meh. How many are there? Thousands? Millions?
Isaac - Cool.
Oscar - Another good'un.

I like a lot more boys' names than girls' names, as may be obvious!
