Hi,
This is one of our top names atm (we're ignoring the Kaiser Chiefs song) but can you tell me impressions of it please? Is it chavvy, is it too popular etc? I know it was very popular a few years ago but not sure amongst babies born recently.
Thanks Smile

It always makes me think "curry"

jinglebellyalltheway · 16/12/2012 19:08

nice, slightly pet namish, but still not too frilly

Scroobius · 16/12/2012 19:09

Never even thought of the curry thing! Then again we're up north so not so much rhyming slang here.

OK, I'm going to be honest, since you're asking for opinions. Ruby is nice enough but then I've never really understood why it was so popular. To my mind, it is already sounding dated, just because it was so popular.

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 16/12/2012 19:16

It's a good name song - Ruby My Love, by Cat Stevens
(an important criterion for me!)

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 16/12/2012 19:17

Only know nice Rubys so has good connotations for me.

Wishfulmakeupping · 16/12/2012 19:17

I like it but it's very very popular

VBisme · 16/12/2012 19:20

I like it.

nelly83 · 16/12/2012 19:42

It is on our list too (due in just under 3 wks) along with Scarlett. We love both but cant decide which one we like the best (prob end up with neither!!).

The thing putting me off Ruby is that a lot of people say they know dogs called Ruby - in fact an old work mate of mine does have a dog called Ruby! But I think there are enough human Rubys around to make it ok to choose!

I have been teaching for about 9 years and only ever come across 2 Rubys and 2 Scarletts. I work with young children too so I would have expected to see a lot more of them. I don't know where they all live but its not in Yorkshire!

Do you have any other names yet or just Ruby. I think it will age well i.e. I could imagine a grandma Ruby! not sure Scarlett work that well?

sorry I've not been much use to you! x

AfterEightMintyy · 16/12/2012 19:53

It is extremely popular. I think it was no. 2 on the girls list in 2010 or 2011.

I gave the name to my dd in January 2001 when it was still quite unusual. It has become popular because it is a beautiful name.

coldcupoftea · 16/12/2012 20:04

I like it, but it was very popular a few years ago- less so now I think. My DDs are 4 and 2 and I don't think I've ever come across a little Ruby!

fairydustallover · 16/12/2012 20:12

It is quite popular. My daughter is 4 and has two friends called. Ruby. Also two of my friends have daughters called Ruby- aged 3 and 4. I used to like it after watching Cutting It Smile

Scroobius · 16/12/2012 21:18

The dated thing was why I was a bit worried about it being popular; the same thing has happened with my name which was very popular in the mid 80s. We've only got a couple if other names but they are completely different; Caitlin and Ella (which I know is popular as well).
It's so difficult!!

Love it

storynanny · 18/12/2012 15:49

Lots and lots of Ruby's in my local schools where I am a supply teacher. It's one of my favourite names, if I had been blessed with a daughter it was on my short list. Haven't come across a Ruby yet who wasn't delightful, however none of them seem to know that their name is a colour and a precious stone. That's infant age though.

shoobidoo · 18/12/2012 16:06

Lots of Rubys (or should that be Rubies?) so quite a trendy which may start to sound dated as it falls out of favour again.

I'm not keen on cutesy names like Evie, Ellie, Ruby, Molly, Lolly etc. but of course itis your baby and YOU'VE got to love it!

SquealyB · 18/12/2012 16:11

Hmm.....I think it would be hard to imagine an adult "Ruby". It is very popular at the moment though so clearly a lot of people really like this name.

Of your other choices, I like Caitlin.

HoHoHokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 18/12/2012 16:16

I have a Ruby, we call her Rubes mostly.

She is 6 and in a large 4 form entry primary but there are only two of them in her year.

I was worried that there would be more i didn't realise until after we named them how popular it was.

I love it.

Floggingmolly · 18/12/2012 16:25

Squealy, I find it hard to imagine a toddler called Ruby, to me it summons up an image of either an east end barmaid, or the parlour maid in an Agatha Christie novel.

SquealyB · 18/12/2012 16:30

Flogging it is funny how different names conjure up different images for people! I always try and imagine if it were my name how would I feel introducing myself at a meeting.

Fragglewump · 18/12/2012 16:37

I chose Ruby because it was my Grandmas name who was born in 1917 and was one hell of a game bird! RIP.....
My daughter was born in 2000 and it was unusual then - but soon after a character in Eastenders was called ruby and it gained popularity......
However she is the only Ruby in her school and I still love love love her name!!

Leafmould · 18/12/2012 16:45

It reached number 1 for girls names in England and wales in 2007

If you are interested in finding out how popular names were since 1996 dark greener is a really interesting site.

CharlieBoo · 18/12/2012 20:31

I think it's lovely

AlexanderS · 18/12/2012 20:51

Ruby was number 7 in the baby name charts for 2011 (3,702 babies were called it). So still very popular. I would expect a Ruby to come from a working-class background.

Scroobius · 19/12/2012 08:55

Thanks for these thoughts. It is interesting hearing others' perceptions, for example I would think Ruby is more of a character name than a girly name. Also I like that for a lot of people it gives a strong idea ie. working class, game bird etc. I know it sounds daft but my name really is quite classless, plain, inoffensive and therefore a bit boring and I really don't want to give my daughter a name like that (but I'm not brave enough to go really far out).
