Welsh Boys Names...

We're English although have Welsh family on both sides, my mum's relatives are all Welsh, my husband spent a lot of time in Wales growing up, so we have been influenced by Wales for our daughters and now we're trying to come up with a name for our first son.

We currently have Isobel (not Welsh, I know) Siân and Carys. They're names that aren't too obscure here nor difficult for the English to say (once you get past "Is it Sigh-anne or See-anne?" Xmas Hmm).

Things we're looking for in a boys name, not so Welsh that we start to look themed, not David variations, I'm personally not keen on John variations because of having a Siân although he seems to be going that way. I don't mind if it's Scottish/ Irish names either actually, Isobel is the Scottish spelling, or old English names - the girls and I suggested Warwick as we got married there and I take the girls a lot, but he's not keen, although my mum (the only person we really trust with names during pregnancy) is, so feel free to tell me it's a good name Xmas Wink

Don't know if this is too Welsh, but Cai? Easy to pronounce when you see it.

Bryn
Gareth
Ieuan

Warwick is unusual but after a few moments I thought that's smart, it grew on me. Do you think your husband might come round to liking it?

I have a soft spot for Morgan and Griffith, I Googled Welsh saints' names and there were two I noticed and liked, Teilo (9th Feb) and Asa (11th May).

I like Warwick actually. But I'm possibly influenced by the fact that I really loved a character from CSI called Warwick.

How about Iago? Welsh for James (I think) but also not just a Welsh name of course.
Steffan is another easy to pronounce name that isn't necessarily thought of as Welsh.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 05/12/2012 22:10

My favourite is Griffith but if it were me I would go for just Griff or at a push Griffin as my dm has terrible form for spitting when talking and I really dont want to be showered everytime she mentions the name.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 05/12/2012 22:13

I am english, DH is welsh.

My favourite Welsh boy's name is Rhodri. I also like Ioan, Iestyn, Gethin, Bryn, Tomas, Garth

Flossiechops · 05/12/2012 22:13

Without a shadow of a doubt the best welsh boys name is Dylan. Of course I say this as I have one myself (welsh dh!) I didn't like it at first but living in England there aren't that many and now I think it looks gorgeous when I see it written. But then I'm biased!

I'm going to have to share these with him tomorrow, there's a few I really like. I'm really getting into the Arthurian names. I think I may have problems with that though because whilst he loves the Arthurian legends, he may not want to be associated with a certain programme! He likes Ieuan, so not too close to Siân or an obvious Jane and John thing but I'd know. I might be able to persuade him on a name that includes Wyn as he was just saying it was his great-uncle's name but it's too old man.

After the day we've had I feel like choosing a very Welsh name that will make people pause and struggle with it because it would make me laugh for certain people to have problems! BUT I can't choose a name to last his life to be mean to mean people (I could have it as a fake name and change it within a year... Xmas HmmXmas Grin)

McKayz · 06/12/2012 06:50

Dylan is a great name. (Biased as its DS2's name)

I have a welsh DH(not DS2's dad) and we looked at welsh names and we both love Ianto, Ioan and Gethin. I like Rhys but there are 6 in DS1's little school here in Yorkshire.

Inertia · 06/12/2012 07:01
