For a girl. Too much like a Borrower?

Honestly. I think it's terrible. But I have no taste (apparently) so don't let that put you off.

RooneyMara · 03/12/2012 17:18

It's a name that was made up by the author I think..

you could try Harriet? Or yes you will sound like a loon Grin

ikwym though, it's pretty in itself

FunnysInLaJardin · 03/12/2012 17:19

Hommily? Pod? I love the Borrowers names

SrirachaGirl · 03/12/2012 17:23

The Borrowers. Don't do it.

Harriet? Henrietta? Hetty? Betty? Juliette?

WonkyWilly · 03/12/2012 17:48

It's only ok, how about Araminta?

Screaminabdabs · 03/12/2012 17:53

It was made up by the author - it's a misheard (by the Borrowers) Harriet.

I love it; but it would be a brave choice.

12ylnon · 03/12/2012 18:00

The weird thing is it's been approved and loved by both sets of grandparents, who vetoed our fairly normal first choices.
Araminta- MY GOD, i would die laughing every time she got called Minty. Nice name, not for us though :)

I always wanted a daughter called Arrietty when I was a little girl. Possibly a blessing that I have two sons...

Screaminabdabs · 03/12/2012 18:40

Oh, go for it. Smile These days there are so many names around, and at least it's a literary name. Not Beyonce.

See if others on here say they love it. It warms the cockles of my heart. Smile She is a great heroine.

BananaBubbles · 03/12/2012 18:46

I love it.

NoTeaForMe · 03/12/2012 19:06

Could you use Harriet? Arrietty could be a nickname - I know lots of people don't see the point of naming the baby one thing and using another but plenty of people do it!

I love Arrietty, but I do instantly think of the borrowers, the fact the author made it up puts me off!

GiannaK · 04/12/2012 11:34

What about Areti? It means Grace/virtue. It is a Greek name.

Rhubarbgarden · 04/12/2012 19:49

I have had a secret yearning to use this name for years. Please use it.

Screaminabdabaubles · 04/12/2012 20:46

"Secret yearning" - yes, that sums it up!

StellaNova · 04/12/2012 21:25

Oh Harriet! The author says of the Borrowers "even their names were borrowed" or something and I always wondered how Arrietty was a borrowed name.

I like it OP.

TeacupTempest · 04/12/2012 21:46

I like it

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/12/2012 21:53

I love it but it was v obviously a made up 'borrowed' name, not that this is necessarily a bad thing. It's certainly a much nicer name than flipping Wendy (made up for Peter Pan and my hated mn!).

How about Ariadne?

Love Harriet too.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/12/2012 22:04

Arriety is my second favourite name for a fictional female under six inches in height Grin

ripsishere · 04/12/2012 22:08

I love it. I suggested it to DH. His face was very similar to Hmm

NiceOneCenturion · 04/12/2012 22:29

I quite like it, but what if she's really short?

GrimmaTheNome · 04/12/2012 22:32

Or really tall.

Harriet and use Arrietty as a nickname really is best bet.

NiceOneCenturion · 04/12/2012 22:42

And when all your safety pins go missing won?t you always be a tiny bit suspicious?

It is lovely in its own way, I like it better than Harriet tbh. I don't know in all honesty if I would use it, but part of me thinks someone should!

chipmonkey · 04/12/2012 22:42

It was made up but I suppose every name had to be made-up at some point in time otherwise or we'd all be called Girl or Boy.

Screaminabdabaubles · 04/12/2012 22:45

She might have to cope, throughout her life, with people saying: "Do you want to borrow something?" Which will wear very thin by the time she is three and a half.
