Naming after my grandfather - a challenge for you!

Jojoba1986 · 01/12/2012 19:36

My grandad died when I was 12 & I'd love to name a baby after him but he hated all his names & would be horrified if we used any of them! Can anyone think of names that are related/similar to Dudley, Lionel or Mortimer for either gender that are a little more common?

(Told you it was a challenge!) Grin

PieEyedAndLairy · 01/12/2012 20:11

We have a relative called Liona

Yika · 01/12/2012 20:12

Or think of a quality that represents your grandfather and then choose a name with that meaning?

Yika · 01/12/2012 20:12

I like the Spanish version of Lionel, Leonel.

Rhienne · 01/12/2012 20:25

Davie Lyell Montgomery?
Leon, Lynley, Leander, Leonard
Audley

Apparently Dudley means "people's field" and other names with meanings relating to fields include Ansley.

MolotovCocktail · 01/12/2012 21:15

Dexter?

Milton? Monty? Milo? Miles?

Louis?

MolotovCocktail · 01/12/2012 21:19

Delia? Delilah?

Marnie? Mariella? Marielle? (Mortimer means 'dead sea', so I thought girl's names with a sea-related meaning)

Leonard? Lila?

MolotovCocktail · 01/12/2012 21:21

Not Leonard for a girl! Blush

Oh God, no!

I meant to type Leonie or Leona, but my fucking phone autocorrected me!

Allalonenow · 01/12/2012 21:31

I really like Dudley, I've known two, and they have both been warm generous people, so I'd just use that, not very helpful for you though. What were his parents and his children called, maybe you could use one of their names and still have that family link to your grandfather?

Empross76 · 18/12/2012 11:22

There's a Welsh name - Llion - pronounced Llee-onn. Similar to Lionel?

thegreylady · 18/12/2012 19:54

I love Mortimer and Dudley

LittlePandaBear · 18/12/2012 20:46

HoratiaLovesBabyJesus · 18/12/2012 20:51

What was his surname? Is that useable as a middle name?

That's what we did for DC1 - used a missed relative's maiden name as a middle name.

pinkandyellowbutterfly · 18/12/2012 21:03

the word 'mort' has a very dark meaning that derives from the latin - think mortality

Dramajustfollowsme · 18/12/2012 21:05

As my mum's name and our surname are very similar, I didn't want to use her Christian name but wanted to honour her. I went for Grace as she loved the hymn "amazing grace" and it pretty much summed mum up too.

Dinglebert · 18/12/2012 22:17

If he hated his names, how about looking at the things he loved and getting inspiration from there?

Name choosing is too hard!

www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Lionel

this site gives you alternatives. lionel - lyndley or leon - i quite like lyndley as a middle name

mortimer means stagnant lake apparently.

MaryChalloner · 19/12/2012 10:27

we just used the surname as a third middle name for our ds who had the same birthday as his great grandmother. she was really pleased.

StellaNova · 19/12/2012 10:29

Morten for a boy, like Charlie's friend in Charlie and Lola?
Morvern for a girl like Morvern Callar? (bit stretching!)

The female writer of We Need To Talk About Kevin is called Lionel.
