Beattie - Bea for short

I know a Beattie, it's short for Beatrice...?

Hennycluckington · 20/11/2012 12:59

Yes short for Beatrice but I'm not keen on using Beatrice or Beatrix. Would it be odd to use Beattie as a first name do you think?

My friend wanted to name her DD Beattie but her DH vetoed it because he heard it as BT (as in British Telecom) and made him think of the Maureen Lipman character in the ads.

I liked it but he has put me off too now!

thegreylady · 21/11/2012 12:26

I'd go with Bea if I didn't like Beatrice or Beatrix.Beattie is too BT.You could go with Bettina or Bernice.

ConfusedandBemused · 21/11/2012 12:31

Love Bea but Beattie is awful!

MrsJamin · 21/11/2012 12:34

Love Beatrice and Bea but not Beattie!

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/11/2012 12:39

How do you feel about Behati? It's Afrikaans for Beatrice.

Beattie makes me think of the actor Warren Beatty.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 21/11/2012 12:39

No, it's a surname and she would undoubtedly be known as Batty at some point in her life. Bea works except it autocorrects to bra.

squoosh · 21/11/2012 14:06

It's ultra frumpy.

dabdab · 21/11/2012 14:07

Really sorry, but 'beating' is the first thing that came into my head.

AKissIsNotAContract · 21/11/2012 14:08

How about Bettina? I love that name.

AlexanderS · 21/11/2012 16:09

Hmm...what about Alberta/Gilberta/Norberta/Roberta/other names that can shortened to Berta/Bertie? I think Alberta is super-classy, and has a great meaning ('noble and intelligent'), and Albert is experiencing a revival so why shouldn't its feminine equivalent, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to use something so unusual.

If you did use Beattie would you pronounce it 'bee-a-tee' or 'bee-tee' or 'beer-tee'?

badtime · 21/11/2012 16:14

Beata (Bay-ah-ta) is a different version of the name - it's pretty common in some parts of Europe.
I also like Betrys, which is a Welsh variant.
I think 'Beattie' would work as a nickname for either.

Hennycluckington · 21/11/2012 22:16

Thanks to you all for your input. Hmm I wasn't sure if my pregnancy hormones where influencing my name choosing.....obviously that's a yes Smile
Back to trawling names I think.
Thanks for all the suggestions but none of them are making me think "that's the one" but very grateful all the same.

Love Betty, if that helps! For me Beattie is not an uncommon Scottish surname, and quite masculine (even though I see how close it is to the other girls names!)

kellyhowells82 · 22/11/2012 13:21

Yeah sorry I don't like it! Love Bea, Beatrice or Beatrix but not Beattie - sounds like a surname and not imeediately obvious as a girl's name either
