Frederick, Tom, Asher

Our count-down boys names. What do you think?

I love Frederick and Asher. I have met one Frederick in my life and immediately said, "What a great name!" (he wasn't Fred). I do know a little Fred. I know an Asher too and since he's a lovely boy, I love that name (he's about 14). Not keen on Tom, a bit two-a-penny public school. How about Francis or Franklin?

Frederick is nice too, but I'm less keen on Fred or Freddie. Tom is a little bland imo, sorry.

I like Freddie with Frederick as a full name.

Tom is a bit meh. Perfectly fine, but nothing special, would go for Thomas on BC.

LOVE Asher. Different, but not unheard of, not hard to say/spell.

I LOVE Frederick. Freddie works well for a little boy. I like Tom but am not that keen on Asher.

Asher is not nice. Is it a classic? It feels like a modern trendy American style name to me. That may just be my ignorance, but there's will probably be lots of other ignoramuses like me that think the same.

Frederick is lovely, and Freddie and Fred are good nicknames.

Tom is classic. It's a good solid proper name. Men called Tom are often attractive I find.

Frederick is on my shortlist too, so it's nice to see some enthusiastic responses on here. My husband loves it a bit more than I do - my greatest fear (possible slight exaggeration) is that he'd be called Rick for short, a name I detest.

Asher and Thomas (Tom) also lovely. You have a great shortlist!

Asher was the youngest son of Jacob. He was one of the nice brothers of Joseph of technicolour dreamcoat fame. The name means happiness apparently. I love it and it is top of my list if we have a DS but then my DH is Israeli so we have quite a few Hebrew names on the list!

I thought Joseph was the youngest?

Benjamin was the youngest (I think). Asher was before Dan (in the song list of brothers!)

Gosh ladies, I'm having an education here and a good giggle too so thank-you! If only every-one else got the biblical meaning and the "happiness" meaning too. Most people haven't heard of it and turn their nose up and see a reference to ash and to be honest if I hadn't been looking up meanings I wouldn't have a clue either (with you Ohsiena). Panda you're lucky your husband is Israeli, it will be more accepted.

The more I think of Frederick, the more I like it. Not keen on Freddie but like Fred. Perhaps a compromise would be Frederick Asher (Dan Benjamin Joseph) all nice names. I think Tom's out- I agree with the handsome point but it's not quite as interesting as Frederick.

No - it was Benjamin! And to think my friends and I spent nearly a whole summer holidays re-enacting Joseph after seeing it with Jason Donavon! For shame! Hehe :)

I'm refusing to discuss any potential baby names with anyone in RL as people can be so rude about the nicest names. I caved and mentioned one (lovely, Shakesperean) girls name to my SiL the other day (who had all sorts of horrified responses to her DCs names) as I thought she may be more open-minded and she gave a bit of a funny look then suggested Lolita!

I do like Frederick Asher though - sounds lovely!

How about Zebulun? Zeb is a great nn!!!

My DS is 1 year old and is called Freddy (for short).
We get lots of compliments on the name and i personally think it's such a cute little boy name - but at the same time I think the full name Frederik (european spelling) on a cv when he is grown up doesn't sound too fun and frivolous - a man to be taken seriously!!! :)

I think Asher is a lovely name.

OP, if you don't like the nickname Freddie, then I'd perhaps not name your ds Frederick because it is a very widely used nickname in my experience.

Agree that Tom is a little dull. Depends on how common/unusual your surname is. You don't want another Tom Smith, Tom Jones or Tom Williams - he'll have a hard time differentiating himself with those.

Merrymarigold- there are some lovely names there. Our surname begins with Z and is very unusual so steering away from Z first names. Love Levi, husband doesn't. Reuben and Joseph are lovely too and would go well with the surname. Frederick equally as those if not a little better.

To all the mummies to Freddies, Freds and Fredericks good choice, Sonniebonnie, absolutely take your suggestion that Frederick naturally turns into Freddie. I don't mind other people calling him Freddie. My Granddad was a Fred and the most composed, wonderfully kind man who was a definite Fred so that's been drummed into me. Freddie feels alien to me but it's still a lovely name, I wouldn't take offence if affectionately known as Freddie.

Omri- due 5 weeks time. Was 5 weeks early last time though! How about you?

Panda- Seeing as we have similar tastes would you mind if I asked which other hebrew names you have chosen? Do you like Solomon? That's really the other name we like.

Frederick is lovely, but I don't Asher, sounds too contrived and will date quickly, Thomas is a good solid name with Tom for nn.

Allalonenow- yes see where you're coming from, have ruled out Thomas much prefer Tom as full name for some reason. Not sure why.
