So scan revealed it's a boy!

Looking for a vintagey but not madly popular name, current ideas DH and I both like are

Arthur
Rupert
Henry (too popular?)
Leonard
Herbert/ Herbie
Elton
Franklin
Aidan (lost its vintage feel?)
And the wildcard -Tavish?!

What do you think?

Aiden doesn't sound remotely vintage to me - didn't realise it was.

Arthur is my favourite from the list, apart from Henry which is lovely but is quite well used - Rupert the bear is still on kids TV ;) Are you OK with the shortenings that will get used for the longer ones whether you want them to or not (Patrick to Pat for example)?

manicinsomniac · 06/11/2012 12:01

Arthur - dislike it, too old mannish for me
Patrick - love it
Rupert - it's ok, not especially keen
Henry - really like it
Leonard - it's ok
Herbert/ Herbie - dislike it, think it's old fashioned in an almost comedic way
Elton - not keen
Franklin - not keen
Aidan - love it
Tavish - quite like it. I teach one and thought it was made up until he told me it's James in some other language (Gaelic?)

I like Leonard, and Arthur, although I think it's quite popular atm. Patrick's lovely too, although I'm not as keen on Pat for a boy, whereas Len/Lenny/Leo/Leon and Art/Arty are all nice imo. In fact, the nn potential is what sells Leonard to me.

Tavish is brilliant. I love it. You have to have some Scottish connection though.

Leonard, Rupert and Herbert are all pillock names to me.

Elton just makes me think Elton John.

Arthur and Gabriel are nice but pretty popular, especially Gabriel.

I like Arthur and Gilbert.

Can I throw Clifford into the mix?

Rhubarbgarden · 06/11/2012 14:19

Sorry that second Arthur should have been Francis!

LittleMilla · 06/11/2012 14:23

I have a Wilfred that we call Wilf - he's a little dude and we get lots of compliments about his name, 18mo now. Went on to ancestory.com and found it there - was my mum's great uncle!

I know quite a few Arthur's but I am now marking Rex (although is that a dog's name?).

MadameCastafiore · 06/11/2012 14:26

Otto
Hector
Wilf
Max

Of the suggestions above, I really like Leonard, Aidan, Quentin and Tavish (although have never met a Tavish...). How about Clement or Cassian?

Rhubarbgarden · 06/11/2012 20:08

Edgar?

OwedToAutumn · 06/11/2012 20:10

Herbert was my grandfather's name. He was always called Bert, but I like Herbie as well, or Bertie.

thegreylady · 06/11/2012 20:14

I like Gilbert too.I also like Arthur and Henry. I've never met a Tavish except for a Scottie dog owned by my great uncle!

Edwin

Great names! We have a Arthur and an Edward / Ted (and Ted middle name is Gabriel!) and love both obviously. We considered Wilfred, Reuben, Edgar and Albert both times. Also really like Herbie and Lenny which are two of our grandparents names. Henry is nice but very popular near us which puts me off. Met a toddler Gilbert recently and he was very cute so warming to that name too. Good luck!
