Wouldn't be my first choice

pugsmum · 30/10/2012 18:16

i think it will always be miss - pronounced

PhyllisDoris · 30/10/2012 18:44

Don't like it Sad

EdsRedeemingQualities · 30/10/2012 18:44

I'm waiting for you to finish typing the name tbh. Is that it?

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 30/10/2012 18:46

LOL - I thought you had posted too soon as well. Dre??? WTF?

EdsRedeemingQualities · 30/10/2012 19:16

I am sorry. It is actually a good name, I like it in that film (what was that film with the little boy...was it Karate Kid?) but it might not work in the UK as well as it does in the USA. Maybe it would if it were short for something? Like a nickname.

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/10/2012 19:17

as in Dr Dre? Not really, a bit too 'rappy' for me

Strikes me as trying a bit too hard to be cool. Don't like it, sorry

musttidyupmusttidyup · 31/10/2012 11:13

Yes. Got to say I was surprised at this choice.

squoosh · 31/10/2012 12:03

I'd assume you were a Dr Dre fan, then I'd assume you were a 15 year old Dr Dre fan.

I'm sure Dr Dre's actual name is Andre.

Ruprekt · 31/10/2012 12:05

Tis truly truly awful!

TomsBentPinky · 31/10/2012 12:05

Shit.

No.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 31/10/2012 13:08

Shit. Yes. DS2 told me he has a new friend called Dre (actually he said dway) 'Dwayne?' I asked. No. ''Trey'? No. Definitely Dway mummy. Grin

OP posts:
birdofthenorth · 31/10/2012 13:24

How old is your DS? Must be Trey surely!

musttidyupmusttidyup · 31/10/2012 14:17
  1. Dre. I checked the tray. Definitely Dre's tray Grin not Trey's tray Grin

As a shortened form of Andre it's ok, as a name on it's own no.

Ummofumbridge · 31/10/2012 14:45

Maybe he'll aspire to enter the medical profession as he grows.
Hmm
I have heard of it actually. In 'merica

Leonas · 02/11/2012 19:33

A friend of mine teaches a Dre at primary school - it is an inner city Scottish school and the name just doesn't fit!
I think it is awful - trying too hard to be American rappers

BananaPhone · 02/11/2012 19:36

I know a few boys called Dre.

It's a perfectly ok name. I prefer it as an NN for Andre rather than as a name in its own right, though.

BananaPhone · 02/11/2012 19:43

Also , Hmm at all the 'ugh, he'll sound like a rapper' comments.... You don't get loads of 'ugh, he'll sound like a footballer' responses if Jermain is suggested.

Why not say what you mean and say that you don't like it 'cause it sounds black. Black and working class . Believe it or not, there are far worse things than being - or sounding - like you are either of those things. Jesus.

I don't agree with you there BananaPhone.

Jermain is a proper name, Dre is an abbreviation of Andre. I have never, ever heard of a Dre pther than Dr Dre, have heard of loads of Jermains. It would be the same to me as if someone called their child Madonna.

TotallyEggFlipped · 02/11/2012 19:52

It made me think of DRE (digital rectal examination)

BananaPhone · 02/11/2012 19:54

Well there's plenty of Millie-type names that get flung about on here the whole time which aren't derided for not being 'proper' names.

In fact, a common refrain is: 'Why call her Catherine for the birth certificate if you're going to call her Katie? Just call her Katie, it's fine!'

It's got fuck all to do with it being an abbreviation. It's because it sounds black and working class to bigoted ears.
