I'm 18wks pregnant with DC2 and although birth is a long way off, it will be here before we know it and I have no boy's names that I like (we aren't going to find out the sex). I have a couple of girl's names decided on, and a short list of boy's names, but none I love - any more suggestions/thoughts? DH isn't keen on anything too 'out there'...

Joel
Joseph / Joe
Patrick
Francis
Toby

There are lots of others such as Henry / William / Edward that we like but have already been commandeered by close relatives so they're out. Bah.

ps DD is Imogen, if DC2 is a girl, we love Penelope or Meredith...

Patrick, Francis and Toby are all lovely.

Particularly Francis, as I've always loved this name yet never met a little boy called this. It's the holy grail of an unused classic!!!

I don't like the way It feels to say Joel. Not sure if that makes sense but I find it an awkward sound.

Joseph is very nice but lots and lots of them abut 10 years ago, had its day for a bit I think.

How about:

Gregory

Hamish

Fergus

Christopher (Kit as a nick name LOVE this)

Elliot

Arthur

baskingseals · 30/10/2012 22:30

oh sorry Blush - you didn't want girls' names suggestions, please ignore

Ohsiena · 30/10/2012 22:31

Ohhh similar thinking to baskingseals!!

JessieEssex · 30/10/2012 22:50

Similar suggestions - thanks both! Looking at the list, I do actually really like Patrick - do you think it's too Irish? I don't mean that in any way anti-Irish, just that we don't have any Irish connections and it might seem strange to pick a typically Irish name. Also like Gregory, thanks (both!) for the suggestion.
basking don't worry about the girl's names - it all helps!

Patrick is fine for non Irish usage. It's quite generic now. It is a lovey name.

Another suggestion:

Jeremy with Jem as a nickname??

JessieEssex · 31/10/2012 08:34

Thanks ohsiena I really like Patrick. Jeremy is lovely too, but I find it hard to disassociate it from a few not so nice Jeremys that I have known!

Ohsiena · 31/10/2012 09:04

Yes I think I'm a bit out of kilter with liking Jeremy.

I think maybe Jeremey Clarkson and Paxman need to 'move on' before Jeremy has its day again. Shame as I think Jem is very cool.

You need to consider nicknames if gong for Patrick...it's a name which will get shortened and/or adapted.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 31/10/2012 09:07

I really like Patrick, but not much else on your list sorry.

What about Oliver, George, Samuel

How about Ethan?

I suggest this as I know a Joel and Ethan so thought it may be to your taste.

It's not my favourite but I do know two gorgeous little Ethans.

WineOhWhy · 31/10/2012 09:12

If you like Joseph and Joel, what about Jonah/Jonas? Can also be shortened to Joe

StarsGhostTail · 31/10/2012 09:23

I have trouble with Patrick.

In full it's lovely, but not being Irish, Pat is short for Patricia.

I was totally thrown, by Pat the male dog in my "Janet and John@ reading books.
Pat was my friends Mum. It was years and years later it dawned on me the stupid dog was obviously called Patrick. (I guess it could also be a pun, on patting the dog. But they are such awful books I doubt it).

Love your other choices and Meradith is lovely (Penny is nice too).

Francis is lovely, but I'm biased. I know two, one first name and one second and both are lovely.

JessieEssex · 31/10/2012 09:24

Ohsiena that's one problem with Patrick - it's either Pat or Paddy...

gold I really like all three of those, but have close friends who have used all those names! I suppose at some point, you have to start duplicating...

Back not sure about Ethan or Vincent but I do like Matthew (although the same problem as above applies!)

wine Jonah doesn't work with our surname (starts with an A) but quite like Jonas.

Thanks all!

Patrick Jonah sounds good to me or Toby Francis

JessieEssex · 31/10/2012 09:32

stars - cross post - exactly my point about Patrick!

Does Francis always end up as Frank?

OP posts:
honeytea · 31/10/2012 09:47

I really like Toby, I like the full name Tobias.

Other boys names I like are

Quinn
Reuben
Elias

(we can't use any of those for various reasons but I love them)

Ohsiena · 31/10/2012 10:12

Yes I love Patrick but not keen on Pat or Paddy.

I had this problem with Elizabeth, love it, but hate Liz, and you can't control how it will be used by others in the future.

Never heard the Francis at school called anything other than Francis.
