Enoch - would it have been like calling the baby Adolf?

It was my beloved nan's dad's name and he was killed in WW1. I didn't dare use it for obvious reasons but I think it's a shame the name has been tainted by Powell and was wondering if the MN names jury thinks it could ever be used again? As a name in itself I think it's really rather good! Unusual, some cute nicknames...

There were 23 Enochs born last year, so he wouldn't be on his own!

I did ask DH what he thought of the name last night though (without mentioning this thread at first - we are expecting DC3 so having lots of name chats) but he vetoed it on the grounds of Enoch Powell.

freelancegirl · 31/10/2012 11:30

That's what I thought Bartlett, that it was still too unusual to escape the connection. That said, as soon as a baby is named something it becomes that name so the link would eventually go.

First thought was Powell.

Second thought was St Enoch's shopping centre and subway station in Glasgow.

Third thought was, 'not a very nice name'. It's like ewok but less cute and cuddly.

rivers of blood i'm afraid... of course the more enochs there are the less i would make that association

birdofthenorth · 31/10/2012 14:20

Powell. As clearly as Adolf.

LittleIllusionMachine · 31/10/2012 14:25

DD has an Adolf in her class Shock

squoosh · 31/10/2012 14:31

Not really????

squoosh · 31/10/2012 14:32

A chidl called Adolf??

LittleIllusionMachine · 31/10/2012 15:20

Yep! Not a joke!

LizLem0n · 31/10/2012 15:39

I bet there are a few Adolfs in America, white supremisists. In fact, that's what I'd assume of the parents if I heard it.

PosieParker · 31/10/2012 15:40

I have a black friend called Enoch.

squoosh · 31/10/2012 15:41

You would only name your child Adolf if

a) you were an out and proud neo Nazi
b) you thought it would be 'dead funny'.

Either way it gives me the chills. Poor kid.

LittleIllusionMachine · 31/10/2012 15:44

He isn't white... just weird really.

LittleIllusionMachine · 31/10/2012 15:45

I mean't it's just weird really

LittleIllusionMachine · 31/10/2012 15:45

and also meant hasn't got an apostrophe. ffs.

squoosh · 31/10/2012 15:52

A non white child called Adolf.

I don't really know what to say . . . . . . . . maybe it's a family name! Confused

LittleIllusionMachine · 31/10/2012 15:57

Yep, that's what I'm clinging on to! FWIW family seem perfectly nice! Don't know how they would have failed to see the connection though.

freelancegirl · 31/10/2012 17:21

I guess it is used in other countries - such as Adolfo in Spain. But yes, it's an odd choice!

I know an 11 yr old chinese boy called Enoch. He's an amazingly excellent violinist & I always thought his name was very, very cool!

Anonymumous · 02/11/2012 14:33

I used to like the name Enoch... until someone pointed out that it sounds almost exactly like Eunuch. That put me right off!

Dominodonkey · 03/11/2012 10:49

Not keen on the name itself but the connotation wouldn't bother me. Enoch Powell said that immigration would cause race riots. There have been plenty of race related riots over the past 10 years or so.

EchoBitch · 03/11/2012 23:20

What about Esau.

I saw Esau sitting on a seesaw
I saw Esau Esau me.

Jacob's twin brother.

The St Enoch centre in Glasgow doesn't count, though, because it's named after a female saint; St Mungo's mother. She was Saint Tenue, but it got mispronounced Saint Enue, which somehow (don't ask me how!) ended up as St Enoch.

(Perhaps there was a 6th century equivalent of MN, and her mother asked "Can I use Enoch as a nn for Tenue?")

Puremince · 05/11/2012 09:28

6th century MN - "We really like Tenue for a girl, but we're worried that if she becomes a Saint, the two "ts" will run together and sound like Saint Enue, and she'll end up being called Enoch"

"You're overthinking this. Call her Tenue. It's a lovely name."

Sorry, got distracted.
