non 'girly' girls names

Sorry for the vague title, I'm just really struggling to describe the type of name that we're after!

Ideally, we want a name that is subtly pretty, but not in your face girly so a future DD would have choices to suit her personality.

So if anyone has managed to decode what I mean through my sleep deprived, pregnancy brain jumble, please could you suggest some names that might suit? Currently considering Elliot, Eden and Asha.

Eden and Asha are lovely! Eden Asha sound rather nice as a first name middle name combination.

Elliot isn't a non girly girls name,it's boys name.

I'm not very good at suggesting non girly girl names because I'm at the opposite end of the scale to you :)

I've thought of one! Seren, feminine but not frilly. Welsh for star.

Erin?

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 28/10/2012 21:58

How can you have choices to suit her personality if she is not born?

My name doesn't suit my personality but it's what my mother loved and gave me.
You are over thinking this

Thanks for the suggestions, they're both lovely. I suppose my reasons for this are that I hated my name growing up - it was so frilly, couldn't be shortened and just didn't suit me. I think that maybe a more understated name would be better for suiting any personality, IYSWIM?

What about a name like Elizabeth with loads of nn potential?

CappuccinoCarrie · 28/10/2012 22:02

Niamh/Neve?
DS has a female Elliotte in his playgroup, not really a fan tbh.
Elizabeth/Beth?

RubberNeckNibbler · 28/10/2012 22:05

Leona/Leonie - strong but pretty

PickledFanjoCat · 28/10/2012 22:05

Matilda? You have a few options there. Tilly, mattie.

PickledFanjoCat · 28/10/2012 22:05

Leah?

My favourite girls name is Josephine which is fairly feminine but nickname potential is vast. Jo and Phin are a little less frilly and Josie, Posey, Sephie are good frilly options.

If you want non frilly go for a short name - 2 syllables at the most.

rezzle · 28/10/2012 22:08

Loving these - thanks! Scout is another one I love, but DH isn't sold.

I really like Elliot as a girls name. It's gorgeous

akaemmafrost · 28/10/2012 22:09

I like all your names. What about Alex?

marshmallowpies · 28/10/2012 22:10

Rowan
Juniper
Lauren
Laurel
Hazel

Funny how plant and tree based names seem to me to be 'strong'!

PickledFanjoCat · 28/10/2012 22:10

Alex! That's a good one.

Alexa is lovely.

Lexie if she wants girly and Alex otherwise.

ScabbyColdCrustyCatPuss · 28/10/2012 22:12

Mmmm that me done, can't think of any more!

MummyVicky18 · 28/10/2012 22:17

Ashley or Anya

(Not sure if is a different spelling for a female Ashley?)

marriedinwhite · 28/10/2012 22:20

What's wrong with traditional names. I don't think the following are girlie:

Edith
Jane
Margaret
Alexandra
Phoebe
Davina
Cordelia
Hermione
Harriet

etc..

Yet they are all traditional names.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 28/10/2012 22:22

I have a Meg, which is un-frilly. I also like Elliott and Juno.

Georgia
Tara
Jude

badtime · 28/10/2012 22:32

I like some unisex names. Elliott is perhaps too associated with boys though; would Ellis be a possible alternative? (It was used in the middle ages as a variant of Alice, before they invented spelling).
Other unisex names : Morgan, Meredith, Robin, Vivian, Rowan.

I also like Hero and Leto.
