Nova?

Running out of time to find a name that works in both Dutch and English. DD is due in a few weeks and you get three days after the birth to register the name. Name changes aren't allowed in this country (NL) so the pressure is on! Grin

I haven't found anything I really LOVELOVELOVE, DP likes Lina (I don't mind it, but I don't like 'Lena' - no offence to any Lenas or mums of Lenas - and they sound the same in English) and his second choice is Nova. What do you think?

I used to know a Nova years ago, she was nice enough. There was also a car called a Nova in my native Australia, but it is no longer in production.

DS is called Tom (not Thomas, just Tom).

What do you think?

I had a Nova, I called him Tommy, kept conking out in the rain though.....

This was last century though! If you like the name go for it Grin

I didn't think of Vauxhall Nova, tbh it's such an old car model that I doubt there would be any of them left on the road by the time she got to school age & the name based bullying could take effect!

I think it's a beautiful name for a girl!

I wouldn't use it as Nova to me is a male Marvel superhero.

Take out the 'v''... 'Noa'- it's lovely. 'Nova' is a neddy Vauxhall to me, sorry!

vamosbebe · 27/10/2012 22:04

I have an Italian friend called Milena - how'd that do? Or Marlena?

Nova is a bit of a nothing name to me, sorry Sad it lacks character - however, I'm sure your DD would give it life once she arrives Smile

I went to school with a girl called Nova. She was very beautiful and super cool.

I like it.

It reminds me of, "my friends call me Nova, as in Casanova".

[Seen American Pie far to many times].

It's a bit Bond girlish to me. If you don't have many English friends then I don't totally get why you are worried about how the name works in English, just choose a nice Dutch name, people generally accept unusual names pretty easily if they know that the person comes from a different country (and at the moment 'interesting' names are very in in the UK in any case, so I woudl have thought that pretty much anything would be accepted).

MyLastDuchess · 28/10/2012 07:15

nooka I wasn't that clear, I am a native English speaker but not from the UK (Australian). Baby will be dual national and have an English surname, but will grow up in NL. My parents & other family need to be able to pronounce the name and not be embarrassed by it. DP quite rightly doesn't want a purely English name as he is proudly Dutch and has a Dutch first name/surname himself.

Noa is lovely (very common here right now) but DP's ex has used it and he doesn't want to 'copy' her. Madeleine also lovely but is my niece's name.

Ah, so you really need a Dutch name that's Aussie friendly?

roastdinner · 28/10/2012 17:36

Nova is not terrible. There's so many more hideous names and probably the more you hear it, the more it grows on you. What about Sylvie or Sevan? These are just names on my mind right now!

MyLastDuchess · 28/10/2012 18:27

Nooka, it could be from any country, doesn't have to be Dutch, just can't be too English (as he doesn't want our kids to have purely English names). Make sense? It has to work in Dutch and English, but it could be French or German or even Finnish as long as it fits our other criteria.

Of course as I said our DS is called Tom but that is a fairly common name in Dutch/Flemish as well so it works for us.

I love it, but then I knew a Nova before the car was invented.

Very cool and needs to come back into fashion

Champagne Super Nova in the sky........one day you will find me......

LynetteScavo · 28/10/2012 18:45

What I mean is before Vauxhall Nova's were in production, not before the automobile was invented, obviously!
