I hadn't heard of it before, but her and her DH apparently both mentioned it in the same night!? Is it a character name in something?

It's not a name , it's just random. Infact calling a child Random would make as much sense .

I rate Dashner....0 out of 10.

Floral, 'Random' is a character from a fantasy novel series called 'the Chronicles of Amber'. [hgrin]

One of his brothers' name is top of my hypothetical boy list.

Don't like it.

Well, I really don't like it. I really REALLY don't like it Grin

But I don't have to. None of us do Grin I am fairly sure that if MNers knew my children's names they would HATE them Grin but I don't care.

you don't pick a name because others approve, you pick it because you love it. so if they love it - they should use it.

If other people choose to laugh or sneer or anything when they introduce their baby, that just shows they're rude.

oh, that's not for mumsnet btw, that's for you to tell your friend.

bugger what other people think - have the name you love.

Sometimes people need a reality check. Remember this is a name for a person and the child is the one who has to live a lifetime with it.

James Dashner is a sci-fi author, perhaps that's where they heard it.

Dashiell Hammet wrote hard-boiled detective stories like Raymond Chandler, he actually introduced the world to Sam Spade.

I prefer Dashiell to Dashner. Dashner sounds (a) like a reindeer, (b) dashner through the snow..... (c) like 'dacha' in Russian, which is a country house, (d) pretentious!
If they're going to shorten it to Dash, or Dashy, it'll sound ridiculous.

But, hey ho, it might suit hem as a couple and suit their little boy to a T. How many parents loved X-Files and named their ds Fox??

Actually, yhe more I hear Dashner, the more it grows on me Smile

I had Wolfgang on my shortlist for DS but DH vetoed. 'Wolfy' sounds adorable for a baby, perhaps not for a high court judge (etc).

I'm struggling to remember which is which out of the Kardashians and the Kardassians from Star Trek.

dashiell was a baldy pre-cog in minority report who sees murder as an intrusive visual hallucination
not a great name for a baby
unless you like a name associated with baldy hallucinating tank life

Bloody awful name - too many bloody awful made-up ridiculously-spelt names about IMO

I had the reindeer thing instantly too, sorry.

Their choice, but would not make my list.

Hope your friend survives her MN initiation!!

It makes me think of an american man in khaki shorts and a polo shirt with a cardigan tied around his neck.
