I hadn't heard of it before, but her and her DH apparently both mentioned it in the same night!? Is it a character name in something?

It's not a name , it's just random. Infact calling a child Random would make as much sense .

musicalendorphins · 28/10/2012 01:51

I rate Dashner....0 out of 10.

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear NO

badtime · 28/10/2012 12:52

Floral, 'Random' is a character from a fantasy novel series called 'the Chronicles of Amber'. [hgrin]

One of his brothers' name is top of my hypothetical boy list.

tanfastic · 28/10/2012 12:54

Nope, awful. Sorry.

cece · 28/10/2012 12:54

Isn't it the name of one of FC reindeer?

Feckbox · 28/10/2012 12:58

hilarious

FrothyOM · 28/10/2012 12:58

Don't like it.

HeinousHecate · 28/10/2012 13:01

Well, I really don't like it. I really REALLY don't like it Grin

But I don't have to. None of us do Grin I am fairly sure that if MNers knew my children's names they would HATE them Grin but I don't care.

you don't pick a name because others approve, you pick it because you love it. so if they love it - they should use it.

If other people choose to laugh or sneer or anything when they introduce their baby, that just shows they're rude.

HeinousHecate · 28/10/2012 13:02

oh, that's not for mumsnet btw, that's for you to tell your friend.

bugger what other people think - have the name you love.

scottishmummy · 28/10/2012 13:03

well aint that all v worthy advice
what if name is really stupid/offensive
in scotland registrar can decline daft or offensive names

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor · 28/10/2012 13:09

bugger what other people think - have the name you love.

Sometimes people need a reality check. Remember this is a name for a person and the child is the one who has to live a lifetime with it.

scottishmummy · 28/10/2012 13:13

if mum think dashner or any other out there name is so great
introduce self socially as dashner, Hi, Yes just call me Dashner
a name carries connotations, evokes reaction its a responsible task.not whateva suit yourself

NewNames · 28/10/2012 13:13

Is your friend a Kardashian?

Viviennemary · 28/10/2012 13:14

It sounds like one of Father Christmas's reindeer.

scottishmummy · 28/10/2012 13:17

if she were kardashian it be Kashner
i do recommend the mum use dashner for a while
hi,yeah dashner,everyone calle me dashner

vamosbebe · 28/10/2012 13:24

James Dashner is a sci-fi author, perhaps that's where they heard it.

Dashiell Hammet wrote hard-boiled detective stories like Raymond Chandler, he actually introduced the world to Sam Spade.

I prefer Dashiell to Dashner. Dashner sounds (a) like a reindeer, (b) dashner through the snow..... (c) like 'dacha' in Russian, which is a country house, (d) pretentious!
If they're going to shorten it to Dash, or Dashy, it'll sound ridiculous.

But, hey ho, it might suit hem as a couple and suit their little boy to a T. How many parents loved X-Files and named their ds Fox??

Actually, yhe more I hear Dashner, the more it grows on me Smile

I had Wolfgang on my shortlist for DS but DH vetoed. 'Wolfy' sounds adorable for a baby, perhaps not for a high court judge (etc).

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor · 28/10/2012 13:24

I'm struggling to remember which is which out of the Kardashians and the Kardassians from Star Trek.

scottishmummy · 28/10/2012 13:31

dashiell was a baldy pre-cog in minority report who sees murder as an intrusive visual hallucination
not a great name for a baby
unless you like a name associated with baldy hallucinating tank life

snooter · 28/10/2012 13:35

Bloody awful name - too many bloody awful made-up ridiculously-spelt names about IMO

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 28/10/2012 13:42

I had the reindeer thing instantly too, sorry.

Their choice, but would not make my list.

Hope your friend survives her MN initiation!!

LizLemon030 · 28/10/2012 15:54

sounds like a reindeer

Strawhatpirate · 28/10/2012 16:01

It makes me think of an american man in khaki shorts and a polo shirt with a cardigan tied around his neck.
