Malachi, Ezekiel, Gideon or Fergus?

Dh and I are going round and round in circles with boys names Angry

From my enormous shortlist, these are the only four that dh deems 'acceptable' so what do you think? Middle name will be George or Henry.

Please be kind, I'm 36+6 and starting to panic!

Malachi is the name from The Children of the Corn. That film gives me the creeps.

Fergus sounds like something you'd find on the forest floor. Fur, or fungus.

Rhubarbgarden · 23/10/2012 09:56

I like Fergus. Gideon is ok. Loads of Malachis. Don't personally like Ezekial, it sounds like a corrupt American preacher to me.

3boysgirlontheway · 23/10/2012 15:59

Ezekiel for sure. DD would have been called that if she had been a DS. Fergus is my least favourite, it's a very "uncool" name in Ireland.

mathanxiety · 23/10/2012 17:39

Fergus is lovely (though sadly not in Ireland, where it is a sort of 60s name).
Ezekiel is lovely. Zeke is a lovely nn.

Malachi will be mispronounced. Long EE or long I at the end?

Gideon says 'giddyup' to me.

Fergus Henry
Ezekiel Henry
Fergus George
...

FiercePanda · 23/10/2012 17:47

Fergus is lovely, can't bear the rest, they all sound very try-hard.

elliejjtiny · 23/10/2012 17:54

I have a Malachi. It is pronounced Mal-a-kye but people keep calling him Mal-a-key. Exekiel is my choice name for a DS4 if I ever have one.

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/10/2012 18:17

I really like Gideon! It reminds me of the youngest brother in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Gideon and Malachi are the best two. I really don't like Ezekiel or Fergus. There isn't really rhyme or reason,I just don't like how they sound out loud. Though Gus is a rather cute nickname. Maybe Angus rather than Fergus?

qumquat · 24/10/2012 19:13

Interesting thread where half the posters say Malachis are everywhere and the other half say it's too 'out there'. Definitely my fave from your list, have never come across one myself.

Giddyupgumdrop · 24/10/2012 19:28

I have a Gideon and love the name obv but there was another one at his playgroup. I love being able to call hm giddyup too. Plus didn't know Osborne was a Gideon til it was mentioned on here (he's not one of my fave people).

Know lots of Malachi. But Ezekiel is great. Love the idea of shortening toZeke.

TheWombat · 24/10/2012 19:32

Fergus gets my vote. The others aren't my cup of tea really. Round here (Devon) they are all very unusual names, I do not know '1000s' of any variety!

Rutherford · 24/10/2012 20:13
  1. Ezekiel Henry
  2. Malachi George
  3. Fergus Henry
Don't like Gideon, sorry!
ellesabe · 24/10/2012 20:22

Woah! Thanks for all the replies!

What varied responses! No clear winner at all then...This doesn't really help me one bit... Grin

I think I'll just have to resign myself to the fact that, whichever name we pick, some will love it and some will hate it!

Fergus.
Malachi reminds me of the creepy child in Children of the Corn.
Gideon reminds me of Gideon Osbourne! (don't like it either)
Ezekiel....actually quite like this. Think I prefer Ezra though, or maybe Xander (Alexander).

mignonette · 24/10/2012 22:36

Gideon = Gideon (George) Osborne. Probably not the best association....

BikeRunSki · 24/10/2012 22:37

Fergus

ravenAK · 24/10/2012 22:41

Agree Gideon is the new Margaret when it comes to tainted-beyond-repair-or-at-least-another-50-years.

Know a couple of Malachis & lots of Ferguses.

I'd go for Ezekiel.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/10/2012 23:23

George Osbournes real name is Gideon? NO WAY! :o

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/10/2012 23:23

That was meant to be a shocked face!

NewNames · 24/10/2012 23:29

Not Gideon!

Gideon Osborne.

Leafmould · 24/10/2012 23:31

Has your dh made a short list?

If you feel that he is being unreasonably restrictive, then put the ball in his court, and see if he comes up with any good names in his short list.

Leafmould · 24/10/2012 23:31

Ps, I like Fergus and Gideon best.

ZenNudist · 24/10/2012 23:38

Don't like any though I can appreciate Malachi and Ezekiel as out there but recognisably of this era names. Fergus sounds very orish. Are you irish? Grin

Go for what you like. Only you know if it works for your social circumstances.

Also thought bizarre choice of outlandish first name and dull normal second but actually very good idea. If your ds hates his name your second name will be good fall back. I knew a verity Rachel in 1990-95 who hated her name and was just rachel. I know a Rodger Neil who is just Neil. I think you do your ds a favour by giving him a characterful name and a 'standard' name. Plus you could be starting a trend!

MrsRhettButler · 24/10/2012 23:41

Malachi is BIG where I live right now (bristol) it defo doesn't sound try hard to me! Grin I actually really like it and would consider it if I had another dc but there are two in my extended family and even more amongst my friends.

ZenNudist · 24/10/2012 23:42
