Final two girl/boy names! What do you think of Alice/Anna and Gregory/Jonathan?

We already have an Emily and I'm 34 weeks pregnant with number two. We don't know the sex.

Dh and I are very indecisive but I'm pleased to say that after a LOT of discussion, we have narrowed it down to:

Boys:
Gregory
Jonathan

Girls:
Alice
Anna

Please could you let me have your opinions or comments? I'm particularly unsure about the boys' names as neither is very popular at the mo and I'm not sure why as I love them! Would be great to know what others think of these names.

Also, any suggestions for middle names would be lovely as we're now struggling with that...

Gregory & Anna.

They are all lovely! I would like to use Jonathan or Gregory but we have a good friend Greg and one of my exes was Jonathan and he was a knob. Sorry. It is a lovely name tho. If you use the whole name then it will just stick. When he's older who knows what nn might come out of it. Anna is on my girl short list, but want to have Alice Kate as middle names (family) and I'm not sure they go.

Do any of the clunky family names you have shorten to something nice for a middle name? DD has middle names Molly Ella after grannies on either side, so I would want to do the same if DC2 is a girl, but will shorten my grans name Kathleen to Kate. Just don't like Kathleen and my gran was always called Kat anyway. I think they are all nice names for children and adults, classic.

I have a Jonathan Daniel, so obviously love that combination. He's usually known as Jon or Jonnie now he's older, sometimes Joe, although some of his friends use a nickname totally unrelated to his birthname. I also like Gregory and Greg, and of your girls names slightly prefer Alice.

Jonathan and Anna. Both lovely.

Thanks for all your helpful comments. Sounds like Jonathans (generally speaking) make wonderful husbands, which is encouraging! Love David, Daniel and Matthew (despite repetitive meaning) as middle names - will have to see what dh thinks!

Have been thinking about middle names for girls today and my best idea so far is Elizabeth with either Alice or Anna. I also like Isobel, but not sure if there will be too many vowels with either of those options. Naomi I also love as a middle name but dh has vetoed it!

Snowflakepie - funnily enough, one of our family names is Kathleen too! She doesn't actually like her name, so not sure she would be too flattered if we used it! That's a good idea to use Kate instead tho.

Anna Elizabeth sounds beautiful (DD1 is Elizabeth so im biased).

But Alice Elizabeth/Isobel it dosent quite sound right to me as the 'Eliz'/'Is' bit at the start is to similar to Alice and they kind of run into each other (but that could just be me with my kiwi accent so dont take my word for itGrin).
Alice Kate or Alice Naomi sounds lovely though.

simplesusan · 23/10/2012 22:27

I like Anna more than Alice but think Alice goes better with Emily.
I too know Jonathans who get Jonty, which I personally dislike. Jon is fine though. Gregory ok, I don't know any.

Allalonenow · 24/10/2012 03:07

Anna Elizabeth is lovely.
How about Jonathan Marcus?

Selenium · 24/10/2012 07:18

Jonathan Marcus sounds good - thanks for the suggestion!

I like them all.

I also love Johnathan and know one with the nn Jonty.

I actually like Johnatan James and the nn may become JJ. Another option but I know many don't like initials as nn iyswim?

EssieW · 24/10/2012 07:34

Love your names. All apart from Gregory were on our list at one point and we have an Alice. She is Alice Elizabeth! That name works really well - great for telling off...
Anna is also v lovely.

DS was nearly Jonathan - we decided it was too close to my dads name and DS would have ended up as 'little johnnie' which we didn't like! I kind of regret not using it though...

birdofthenorth · 24/10/2012 17:27

Really love all four

Jonathan and Gregory equally great IMHO, but Anna probably pips Alice just because I know 3 little Aices (all under 4) and I only one Anna aged 10.

Selenium · 24/10/2012 19:47

Thanks for your lovely comments. It's so nice to get some feedback as we don't want to discuss our name choices with anyone in RL - we like to announce it as a surprise when baby is born! Anna does seem less popular than Alice at the mo so maybe that's a good reason to pick it. It's the only thing I don't like about Emily, in that we meet lots of others. Was hoping for something a little less commonly used this time.

Youarewinning, I agree that Jonathan James does have a certain flow to it and JJ would be another nickname option. The only thing that put me off is that our surname starts with B so initials JJB might make people think of JJB Sports (I suppose there are worse things to worry about!) They've just gone into administration tho so maybe that name won't be familiar for much longer!

i like all your names.

could you have George as a middle name? same sound but different initial.

for Alice, what about Maria? or Louisa? i think Anna Elizabeth sounds lovely.

Cezella · 25/10/2012 11:40

I actually think Alice Anna sounds lovely as a name?
