Just mulling over this one. I know it is very popular but seems to be used as a middle name more than a first name near me. Is it a true timeless classic or a bit boring.
I usually take the view that you can't go wrong with king's names, but would like to gauge others opinions :-)

I love the name James and don't know that many. It's a strong, classic name and you can't go wrong. Sadly, we can't use it as my cousin just nabbed it! Otherwise, would def be on our short list.

LynetteScavo · 22/10/2012 19:46

It's one of the few popular names which isn't boring.

A timeless classic, and one of the few names I cannot fault.

NickNacks · 22/10/2012 19:46

I have a James- my all time favourite name!

Love it love it love it.

Incidentally he's the only one in his 150 place school and has been the entire 5 years he's been there! We can't believe it.

lyndie · 22/10/2012 19:52

I have a 7 year old James! Obvs I love it too. He has a Scottish surname and I think it sounds very distinguished - I can imagine him being Sir James, Lord James, Dr James etc!!! He is the only one in his primary school of 270.

Yellowchair · 23/10/2012 14:32

Love James its a classic and never boring.

dashoflime · 23/10/2012 14:39

My DS is a James! I chose it for the number of potential NN. We call him Jimmy but in the future he might want to be a James, Jamie, Jim or Jay. I like it that he has that scope to self define.

nickeldaisical · 23/10/2012 14:40

it's my favourite boy's nae in the world ever.

it's consistently a favourite because it's a good, timeless name.

there's nothing negative about it.

dashoflime · 23/10/2012 14:47

For people who think its boring: your DC might want to be unobtrusive! Who knows if they'll have the chutzpah to carry of an unusual name. Nothing wrong with boring.

Beveridge · 23/10/2012 14:50

Have a DS called James, named after my Dad (and Granda!) so clearly biased but I like it. (Both my heads of department were also called James. Hamish is the Scots Gaelic version and I know a few of those too!)

Or "Games" as DD called him for the first year, pronounciation was a bit hit and miss for her but she was only 22 month when he was born.

MrsBungleBear · 23/10/2012 14:54

I am not one at all for overly popular names but even I like James. Its a nice strong name.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 23/10/2012 14:56

DS16 is a James. Hes been Jambo pretty much since birth! Grin
James is a lovely name.

StellaNova · 23/10/2012 17:46

Also, you can sing Sweet Baby James as a bedtime song. And indeed Little James by Oasis should you be so inclined. And you can recite James James Morrison Morrison Waetherby George Dupree.

BikeRunSki · 23/10/2012 18:08

Timeless, ageless, classless, classic.

PuffPants · 23/10/2012 18:12

It's a good name. Better than the majority of the try-hard rubbish you read in here.

QueenofLouisiana · 23/10/2012 21:23

I have a James, it is a family name & we love it. I prefer a classic name, rather than one that makes people ask me to repeat it!

Anonymumous · 24/10/2012 14:50

I know two babies called James, a Jimmy aged 8 and loads of grown-ups. It's a bit uninspiring. And now Jimmy Saville comes to mind when I think of it. [hshock]

LonelyCloud · 24/10/2012 21:51

There's plenty of other famous people called James (or by nicknames of James).

Jimmy Saville is unlikely to be the first thing to pop into someone's head if they meet a James/Jim/Jimmy/Jamie etc

cashmere · 24/10/2012 22:38

I prefer it as a middle name. I know 3 babies called James so it might be fairly popular just now too.

saladcreamwitheverything · 24/10/2012 22:44

My DS is James, I've always loved the name. It's timeless! Expect a few more every time there is a new Bond film out though!

LonelyCloud · 24/10/2012 22:47

James has consistently been ranked in the top 20 boys names in England and Wales for the last hundred years.

It was the 7th most popular boys name in England and Wales last year. Although that's for the whole of England and Wales, so popularity may vary from region to region.
