Girls names that work in Dutch, English (and maybe French)

I'm based in Belgium and will be expecting DD2 in March! We are a bilingual family, speaking English and Dutch (Flemish). Where we live is largely French speaking. So, I'm looking for ideas!

Basically, DD1 has a very simple little Irish name spelled as it is pronounced and said more or less the same in the three languages (similar to "Sara"). I'm looking for another name, possibly with an Irish connection, which would also travel well and work in Dutch.

I like some Dutch names, like Marta or Freya for example, but think they are a bit too close to DD1's name. French names are also popular here: like Sophie or Léonie and I'd be open to something like that too. But nothing has really struck me yet and I'd like to start getting some ideas together!

Any inspiration?! Thanks a lot!

Ooh! this is fun. You have some great ideas. Really liking Anneke, Mia, Eva and Astrid so far (though I think Astrid is one of the Royal family here, so probably not a runner)...

Is it? I didn't know that. Does that mean it wouldn't be okay to use?

Monique
Naomi

Well, it would be OK schrodinger, but actually the Flemish don't tend to be such keen royalists ;-) Though extremely mild and non-nationalist, I couldn't see hubby going for it.

Erin?

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 17/10/2012 11:27

Erin is cute, but I think of it as a bit more american really. I woudl like to get an Irish connection in though...

THat's the kind of thing that could work, but I always think of Brigid as a bit of an old lady name.

We much enjoyed compiling a list of totally unusable names for our dutch / english DCs. I can't remember them all but Freek, Goof, Joke and Floor were in there. Prefectly acceptable in dutch but, erm, less so in english.

Finding nmas that worked was quite a struggle, the e endings are a killer: Charlotte prn. Charlotta, Eve prn. Ava, Isabelle prn. Isabella. Glad I don't have to go through all that again!

Anywya, that was of no help at all Hmm

Good luck!

Saskia?

LadyMargolotta · 17/10/2012 12:03

Nora
Lotte/a
Nina
Mara
Minne/a
Anya
Dana

Mia is a bit out of date, associated with middle aged women.

I don't think there is an Astrid in the belgian royal family, maybe in the dutch royal family.

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 17/10/2012 12:04

YY to the unsuitable Dutch names :-) I like Saskia though.

Grin at unusable dutch names.

I know a Bent (Bente for a girl); and a Frig.

LadyMargolotta · 17/10/2012 12:05

If you like Saskia, what about Silke/a or Skye?

jkklpu · 17/10/2012 12:08

Elise
Margot
Louise
Caroline

LadyMargolotta · 17/10/2012 12:09

That reminds me, I also know a baby 'Line'.

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 17/10/2012 12:09

Nina and Anya are nice. You may be right about Mia. As for Princess Astrid...

Elise definitely travels very well.

Anya is lovely
Margot was Anne Frank's sister so presumably that is used in the netherlands ?
Ellen is lovely no idea if that sounds like a Dutch word though. I know no dutch

bent and frig?!

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 17/10/2012 12:12
