Found out this week that DC2 is another boy :o. Great, but bloody hell, boys' names are hard. What do people think of the following?

Aki
Corin
Leo
Robin
Rowan
Sena

(To explain - DH is Japanese. We like fairly gender neutral two-syllable names)

Any other suggestions?

Assume by that you live outside Japan, isambardo. I like Ren (Wren was always a secret favourite girl's name...).

Yes, I have slightly changed my username. Thought this had a better ring to it Confused

Any more thoughts?

comeonbishbosh · 13/10/2012 20:20

Really like Corin and Rowan, both on my 'considering' list. Didn't realise Corin could be assumed as a girls name, underused IMO.

Robin is on my girls list! And, probably showing my ignorance, but would think a Sena was a girl.

I know these are 1 syllable, but have you considered Heath, Arlo, Finn or Ross?

TheObfuscatoryOven · 13/10/2012 21:04

We considered Arlo but are too close to Essex to get away with it :o

One syllable names are tricky because most would be mangled in Japanese. Can you guess which of you suggestions would sound like this...?

Heesu
Lossu

'F' names are also tricky because it's not really a sound found in Japanese - there's something similar, but the front top teeth don't touch the bottom lip when it's said so it's a lot softer, kind of like a Scottish 'wh'. If that makes any sense at all...Confused

MikeLitorisBites · 13/10/2012 21:08

I'm Welsh and aki (not spelt that way) is used to describe some thing horrible.

As in 'dont touch that it's aki'

I love Rowan and Corin from your list.

TheObfuscatoryOven · 13/10/2012 21:21

HolyAutumn's link was also off putting, Mike...Shock

I live Corin, do we think everyone would always all him Colin? In Japanese you can't actually tell the difference. Hmm.

amck5700 · 13/10/2012 21:25

What about Cory instead?

amck5700 · 13/10/2012 21:27

...or Rory?

Queenofthehill · 13/10/2012 21:27

Robin is my favourite, followed by Corin. Aki makes me think of Caribbean food (sorry!).

bigbluebump · 13/10/2012 22:25

I like Corin the best.

RillaBlythe · 14/10/2012 08:58

Robin is a great name.

squoosh · 14/10/2012 18:50

Aki - Ackee and salt fish
Corin - not keen
Leo - like
Robin - not keen
Rowan - not keen at all
Sena - laxative

Cezella · 14/10/2012 22:08

My brother is Robin and nobody (to my knowledge) calls him Rob or ever has done.
Also, I'm welsh and wouldn't have crossed my mind that Aki could be something nasty as previous poster says. To me and in my area that would be "ych a fi" not aki. So wouldn't worry about that. I really like Aki actually.

Sena does make me think of the laxative sorry, like Leo and Aki best

MoelFammau · 14/10/2012 23:11

Biased about Robin - our DD is Robin, shortened to Bob.

MrsJohnDeere · 15/10/2012 06:51

I know 4 Robins, 2 children and 2 adults. They've never been called Rob or Bob.

sashh · 15/10/2012 08:58

Not Aki - it woulnds like the fruit you cook with saltfish.

Robin or Rowan are my favorites.

Ephiny · 15/10/2012 12:43

I love Corin and Leo, Rowan is nice too. Robin just a bit cutesy for me, and Aki I think looks/sounds a bit odd from an English-speaker's point of view.

Sena, - if it's pronounced like Senna then people will think of either the racing driver or the laxative Hmm. Also 'a' endings tend to sound feminine in English which may not be what you want.

TheObfuscatoryOven · 15/10/2012 19:47

Ah, but we already have a Noah...is that the '-a' names exception?

Am listening re laxatives or racing fans Confused.

Ephiny · 15/10/2012 20:43

Well there are always exceptions :) I guess Noah is well known and recognised as a boy's name, whereas Sena wouldn't be so much. Same as names like Elijah, Joshua...hmm, a lot of Biblical ones in this category now I think of it!

Cherrychopsticks · 16/10/2012 14:44

My husband is Japanese too, currently expecting DC1 and you're right - boys names are so hard.
I like most of your list, but are you not worried about the L/R problem? Most names I like have been ruled out because of this.
If not, I also think Leo goes really well with Noah.
And I love Aki - it's my BIL's name!

TheObfuscatoryOven · 16/10/2012 17:54

The only name that really comes a cropper with the l/r thing is Corin, I think. Japanese people would all assume his name was Colin Hmm.

Leo does sound fairly different in Japanese to English (Ray-o!) but that's not a problem necessarily. Are you having a boy? Most of the Japanese/western boys I know are called Noah :o because it's basically the only name where the pronunciation stays the same!

Tsk, I had such a great girls' list as well.

BoyMeetsWorld · 16/10/2012 17:57

Shion is beautiful

TheMightyMojoceratops · 16/10/2012 17:58

My friend has cats called Teri and Aki

DebK2012 · 16/10/2012 18:16

Love Leo!!

VolumeOfACone · 17/10/2012 12:40

I love Robin but I'd worry about the Rob possibility too.
Leo and Corin are great too. Maybe Corin does sound a bit feminine? But I do know a Corinne, so I might be being swayed by that.
